Stagnant water smell in bathroom

Today’s thrilling episode of 2020. I have a unit thing with my toilet and basin beside each other. There’s been a definite whiff of stagnant water for a couple of days now.

Google suggested bicarb and boiling hot water but can I do that in a glassy sink and a toilet?

First check around to make sure there's no actual standing water (ie leakage).

If it's definitely structurally sound, I'd throw bleach around with gay abandon until it stops being stinky.

I'd be wary of boiling water - it'll almost certainly be okay but what a nightmare if anything cracks. Cost benefit analysis says no.

We had this a little while ago. I kept getting wafts of stagnant water while trying to have a relaxing bath. Sad

We used some Mr Muscle sink and drain unlocked. It did the job well. I think you still need to put boiling water down the plug hole but possibly you could get away with just hot water instead of boiling, if you are using a product too.

  • unblocker not unlocked.

Check for a leak/damp. I had the same thing and when DH (eventually) investigated it was the shower leaking behind the tiles

If it’s behind something I am in deep shit. Everything is boxed in 😭

I’ve had a feel and nothing is damp. I’ve been throwing bleach down on the hour since yesterday but if anything it’s made it worse. I’ll get a Mr Muscle too.

It's not damp carpet/towels is it? Or bathmat?

They can get a bit whiffy if they haven't been changed for a while and you don't always realise that that is where the smell is coming from.

I had a persistent smell of wee in my bathroom. I scrubbed and scrubbed the toilet and surrounds, but the smell persisted. Turned out that the dog was using the bathmat as an emergency 'middle of the night' loo when it was raining and she didn't want to go in the garden. I'd been changing the bathmat, but, of course, she was just using the clean one. And I put the damp patches down to people getting out of the shower insufficiently dripped.

It’s definitely drainy. I’ve changed all the towels and been sniffing like a maniac. It’s got worse since the bleach has gone in- good thing? Bad thing?

I've just had this problem in my bathroom last week. Putting bleach down the drain, unblocker etc. However, I realised it was the spongy/scrubby thing I use on the bath and sink. Chucked it in the wash, but it still stinks. I'm going to soak it in laundry disinfectant to see if that improves things.

Have you stuck your nose in the plug holes?

Lindy2 · 16/06/2020 18:26

I had a sniff of all the plug holes and it was absolutely clear the shower was to blame.

If you can you need to try and sniff out the exact location of the problem.

OhTheseSummerNiiiiights · 16/06/2020 19:07

No clear plughole culprit but they have been doused in bleach today. Floor smells clean, I stood on a chair and sniffed the wall too...Couldn’t smell the ceiling but managed to feel it and it’s not damp or anything.

It’s like this cloud of smell between the toilet and the sink.
