Not going to give too much detail so as not to out myself. Aside from my paid job volunteer for a really small charity entirely dependent on donations. I was talking to one of the charity’s donors last week and in retelling a story, he said, “he was a black man...” this was totally irrelevant to the conversation. I did not challenge. Partly because I was taken aback. Partly because his organisation gives the charity money. What would you have done, honestly? I wish I had challenged but I’m sceptical as to how that could have gone.

Depends- 80+ year old, no relevance to the story, leave it.
Younger and ‘background’ to a thinly veiled racist anecdote, challenge.

I’d guess around 65/70 age wise.

My dad is 80 and is not a racist, I know because my daughter is mixed race. There is no excuse. Pull them up on it. Age has nothing to do with it’s ignorance.

That’s the thing, I would if it was a family member/friend/anyone who we didn’t rely on for cash Confused

Honestly I would have just ignored it, as long as he wasn’t using the description in a negative context

No it wasn’t a “and therefore because he was black...” it was as if he was adding to the story but it really didn’t IYSWIM.
