Hayfever itchy throat

FedUpofLockdown123 · 16/06/2020 12:44

After another sleepless night wanting to rip my throat out can anyone recommend anything to relieve an itchy throat caused by hayfever. I am taking antihistamines and using wipes which are helping with the other symptoms but they don't help with this. I am waking through the night and making loud snorting noises (one of my pet hates) to try and scratch itBlush. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

I find that nettle tea helps. Not sure if it is just because it is hit and wet but it does seem to have a slight numbing effect.

FedUpofLockdown123 · 16/06/2020 12:48

Thank you, I have never tried nettle tea I dont like the sound of it but I will pick some up and try it I'm desperate!

Beconase up the nose works well for me. A couple of squirts twice a day and I dont get it.

And I have horrendous asthma and hayfever.

WildRosie · 16/06/2020 12:51

A nasal spray might be the answer. There's a few available with some prescription-only so a word with a pharmacist would be useful.

justasking111 · 16/06/2020 12:54

I make honey lemon drink it works cold as well as hot to soothe throat, keep it by the bed at night.

Bunnyhop1502 · 16/06/2020 12:56

I second Beconase! It works so well, soothes itching within minutes. Believe it’s on special in Tesco at the moment 👍🏻

FedUpofLockdown123 · 16/06/2020 13:03

Beconase it is then thank you all! I need to go to Tesco soon so that's handy. I had read honey and lemon as well so will also try this. I'm willing to try anything.

You need a better antihistamine!

Is there any you would recommend? I'm just using supermarket brands at the moment.

I find some antihistamines are better for this than others but it’s been trial and error. Cetirizine works best for the itchy throat for me but acrivastane (Benadryl) is also good.

FedUpofLockdown123 · 16/06/2020 15:01

I've just finished a packet of Cetirizine a couple of weeks ago I can't remember if it made any difference. I will pick some up and try them again to see. I actually had Benadryl in my trolly when I went out to get Beconase but the woman at the checkouts told me she doesn't rate them any better than cheap ones! I wanted them as they are taken throughout the day rather than just once a day.

Snigletted · 16/06/2020 18:21

Cetirizine does not work for me. I take Aerius but it's prescription only.

WildRosie · 17/06/2020 12:11

Fexofenadine is the prescription antihistamine I use, along with Rhinolast prescription nasal spray. Between them they do a fine job.

Gulsink · 17/06/2020 13:30

Just to pre-warn you, nettle tea tastes horrible.

Em3978 · 17/06/2020 13:36

Nettle and Peppermint tea tastes better :) The nettle part really does help hayfever.
Loretedine (sp) antihistamine is worth considering too. Though I now take fexofenadine.
Honey, straight, off a teaspoon, works quite well for a sore throat so might be worth a try in the meantime.

MadeForThis · 17/06/2020 13:38

Can beconaise be taken for longer than a week. I've had sinus congestion ones before and they could only be used for a week.

qwerty222 · 17/06/2020 13:41

Itchy throat is the bane of my life during hay fever season. I second the nasal spray. I use the Boots own one.

I use beconase all summer you buy it over the counter there are no massive restrictions.

Snigletted · 17/06/2020 15:44

No, it shouldn't be taken consistently, over a long time.

averythinline · 17/06/2020 20:14

Go to the GP and get better anti histamine would be my advice.. I use fexofenidine and a prescription spray massive difference although when it's really bad I top up with a ceterizine at night

actiongirl1978 · 17/06/2020 21:46

Beconase just says no more than 4 squirts a day.

I also use fexofenadine and sometimes end the day with a supermarket anti-HIs

Roominmyhouse · 17/06/2020 21:50

Another vote for nasal spray. It helps me so much more than tablets.

Beach11 · 17/06/2020 21:55

I use Fexofenadine & Dymista (sp) nasal spray. I am still suffering but not as bad as usual.
Apparently this year is bad hay fever year. My dc ended up in hospital with a hay fever induced asthma attack. Dc now has to have 2 different antihistamines

FedUpofLockdown123 · 20/06/2020 17:15

Just noticed all the replies on this. Thanks for all the different suggestions give me lots to try if I need to but I'm cured since I started Beconase! I have no hayfever symptoms at all now it's amazing I wish I'd discovered it sooner. Although I wasn't aware it couldn't be used longer than one week I didn't notice that in the instructionsSad.
