The infamous Mumsnet haircut.

Hi, I was considering having a go at the Mumsnet haircut as my hair is all in my face and really irritating. I know you make a ponytail on the top and front of your head, but I wondered if the fringe is involved too? Can anyone help me out ?

Well I don't know the 'mumsnet' way but I am a trained hairdresser and know of the ponytail method to get a very basic layered long hairstyle. My advice, if you really want to try it, is to pull your hair into a very tight ponytail on your crown, not on the top of your head (unless you want some very short layers around the front). Then with the sharpest scissors you have, cut straight across the very ends of the ponytail. Only cut the very smallest amount you can whilst getting all the hair, if that makes sense. To then blend the layers a bit more, point the scissors straight down into the ponytail and chop into it at the very ends. Good luck!

Ps - no the fringe isn't involved. To cut your fringe, section back the rest of your hair, comb down your fringe so you're holding the hair neatly between your ring & middle finger, then lift the fringe up straight out in front before carefully cutting along it. If you like a very casual, feathery fringe, you can also twist your fringe into one twisted up strand, then holding it down the centre of your forehead, carefully cut off the bottom.

Thanks so much, @Badtasteflump! Yes, I have been cutting my fringe for the last few months using the second method you mentioned. I section of the fringe and twist it, then cut a sort of V shape (upside down V!) into it. I will bravely try the Mumsnet haircut later!

You could come out of it looking like Rod Stewart.

Ok...Shandlers, not quite the look I was aiming for! May rethink it.

I know this as I did it and have spent the last 8 weeks of lockdown growing the too short layers out! Thankfully its still long enough to tie up!

FreddoFrogAddict · 15/06/2020 21:04

My hair is growing like crazy at the moment. I plaited it the other day, then on a whim chopped the end off. I would not recommend this.

Grasspigeons · 15/06/2020 21:05

I dont know how long your hair is but look on you tube for straight cut tips if you dont want layers. I basically did pigtails that met under my chin and snipped straight across. Its a slight v at the back but its ok. Obviously if you want layers the mn cut is your thing.

drigon · 15/06/2020 21:08

Thanks, @Grasspigeons, no I don't want layers à la Rod! It's just that my hair grows forwards and is constantly in my face if I don't scrunchie it up. I will try your method.

@drigon - definitely look at you tube as i probably havent explained it well

drigon · 15/06/2020 21:13

Were you happy with it @DartmoorChef? I assume the scarf around it is to cover it up?! I looks fine to me, but I can't see the front bit.

@drigon the fringe was down past my nose and permanently held back with the band. It was too hot and i was so fed up so i got a hair band and scissors 😂

AutumnNymph · 15/06/2020 21:41

I did this on a whim on Sunday and I
Love it.
I Watched a few YouTube videos a and am pleased with the result. I may save my £££ and continue

Well, I had a go and chopped around an inch off the length and fringe. I followed a tutorial on YouTube by Sharee Anoneuvo and although I didn't go over it again as I couldn't be arsed, it turned out ok. See pic of mystery woman!
