Mosquitoes biting me through TWO layers of clothing! Help!

Hi,

So yes....it sucks.

I'm currently sat in the garden with a rain mac on...in 24 degree heat 👍 in the hopes that the waterproof material won't be penetrable. Also socks tucked into trousers, so at least I'm looking good 😳

I always get bad reactions to mosquito bites, especially on my feet, but normally when I cover up, it's ok. Also, shit loads of DEET. But tbh, I don't like using chemicals as strong and controversial as that.

Anyway, sat out last night and I could hear them buzzing around, so put on socks and a cardigan. The bastards bit me through the cardigan AND my top!! Shock

When you Google, it says vast majority can't penetrate most fabrics, so these must be monsters! I've seen them and they are enormous.

I understand that some people are more tasty to them, but this is more like some kind of mutant breed!

I'm in the UK, but where we are are lots of rivers, so no escape really.

Anyone else feel my pain....literally?!

If you are tasty to them, they will happily bite you through 2 layers. It happened to me multiple times. I am tasty to them and have never found the answer.

Try a mix of about 30 drops of lemon eucalyptus essential oil in 50ml witch hazel sprayed liberally on a scarf and socks. Probably best to avoid putting it directly on the skin if you're sensitive.
It is the only natural remedy that has any proven affect and is apparently as effective as DEET just not as long lasting.
I'm really prone to mosquitoes and get bitten through trousers so I've used this over the last few weeks and it seems to work.

The bastards get me through layers too.
I find Avon Skin So Soft does the trick.

They find me delicious so I take daily garlic capsules and a vitamin b complex, both very cheap in Lidl and Aldi. I started this a few years ago for a holiday to Mexico and now I do it every summer even if (like this year) I'm not going abroad. I hardly get bitten at all now.

Rubytinsleslippers · 15/06/2020 20:49

Some supplements are meant to help. Think taking garlic, vitamin b are meant to help if you take them for a while.

woofsaidtimmy · 15/06/2020 20:57

Try taking a daily over-the-counter antihistamine during mosquito weather. You'll still get bitten but the reaction won't be as bad if the antihistamine is already in your system. I find cetirizene the most effective for skin reactions. Don't waste money on the branded ones e.g Piriteze, the cheapo ones are fine.

Citronella candles help keep them away. We got tea light ones and put them on the terrace around our feet on holiday.

We got a little device from an outdoor shop for our tent with a fan that seems to suck them in, with a strip of something in that kills them.

And I agree that antihistamine tablets help with the reaction if you do get bitten.

Spritztime · 15/06/2020 21:39

Thanks everyone.

Do garlic tablets make you smell of garlic? Perhaps a silly question 🤔 I'm pretty sure I have vitamin b a multi vitamin I take. I also upped my marmite intake once I heard that b12 was specifically good, but they clearly still find me irresistible Sad

So Soft does nothing unfortunately. I heard citronella is completely ineffective.

Anything is worth a try surely?

ScorpionQueen · 17/06/2020 18:45

Buy the odourless garlic tablets and you'll be protected against mosquitos and vampires. The cheap ones from Lidl/Aldi are fine.

A diving suit?

Heatherjayne1972 · 17/06/2020 19:17

Try the dry oil spray from Avon

It’s magic

midwestsummer · 17/06/2020 19:19

I take an antihistamine daily during the summer as a result of this.

I have to say-I have read that before so tried it with high hopes. It stinks to high heaven, makes you feel all slimy and I still end up absolutely covered in bites. I think it’s dreadful stuff!

Try Smidge spray @Spritztime. It’s good stuff.
