The Big Green Egg Bbq

Has anyone bought ones of these and are they any good? It’s Dh’s birthday next month and he is bbq obsessed. I’ve just gotten a refund on our cancelled holiday so wondering whether to go for it?

Disclaimer: I can’t get that excited about it personally.

We’ve got a big black egg (I think it’s actually called a pit boss or something like that, a cheaper version from Costco.) it’s great

WellIWasInTheNeighbourhoo · 15/06/2020 17:38

Gas bbqs are so much easier to use and cook with and I can’t tell the difference in taste other than the food is less likely to get burned with gas. Personally I’d go for a Webber.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 15/06/2020 17:46

We've had both has and coal Weber BBQs and would recommend them wholeheartedly.

Gas one was used daily, in a shed, to avoid using an inadequate rented kitchen. Made great food. After 10 years we moved and bought a charcoal one.

That one now is much loved, used weekly and forms the backbone of Saturdays at home. Set it up, make a quick lunch, put more coals on whilst eating and then slow cook a lump of meat over the afternoon, use the dying embers to make fruit based pudding - with or without friends round.

We are learning a new technique, recipe, email every week. It's not the BBQ if our youths, but is definitely all the better for that!

Sorry, meant to end with:

The 2 BBQs are quite different from each other and a comparison would probably let you match your DHs BBQ preference quite well.

I'd have loved a Big Green Egg but there are usually just the 2 of us!

mamakoukla · 15/06/2020 17:50

DH loves his big green egg and he would definitely recommend it

AriettyHomily · 15/06/2020 17:56

I really really want one.

lexloofah · 15/06/2020 17:58

We have had one for about 7 years and use it every chance we get.

Can't compare to a gas bbq as more like an outdoor oven that keeps the moisture in, almost impossible to burn or dry out food. Dh often does a chilli on it in a cast iron Dutch oven, veg and potatoes in foil are great and of course meat of any kind but it is esp good for low and slow.

We are at home during the day normally anyway so make use of it during the week, not just weekends. It does heat up remarkably quickly.

Depends how much time your DH will have to use it, it's a great project for someone to play around with and add extra bits of kit and try methods and recipes but only worth it for the use and pleasure it will bring vs. The cost

BIL was given a Big Green Egg to use, and then promote them. It was absolutely no hardship for him to promote and endorse them, he is evangelical about his big green egg! (He's a fairly well known chef). Just make sure you use the right fuel.

MrsJemimaDuck · 15/06/2020 18:33

My DH has one. I was not thrilled about the cost, but I can grudgingly agree that it’s worth it.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 15/06/2020 18:36

They’re great bits of kit, but not necessarily for everyone. What does he BBQ on at the moment and what kind of things does he cook?

Lookatthat · 15/06/2020 18:37

Yes they’re brilliant. Used by lots of professional kitchens too.

ExpletiveDelighted · 15/06/2020 18:40

My friend has one and loves it.

Colycola · 15/06/2020 20:52

He bbqs from the minute the sun comes out and then reluctantly puts it away from about November onwards. Honestly by the end of the summer the kids are almost in tears from all the fricking bbqs. So if he can do ‘other stuff’ would be great.

I really want one. You can't compare it to a normal bbq from what I understand. It's one of those incredibly expensive aspirational items but if he's going to use it a lot I think it's a fabulous present

Imissmoominmama · 15/06/2020 21:24

My friend has one, she is a very good cook and has made some amazing meals on it. She’s used it for practically every meal since she got it at the start of lockdown.

Imissmoominmama · 15/06/2020 21:24

She bakes bread in it too!

Littlehouses · 15/06/2020 21:29

We have one and love it brought the pizza stone recently as an add on and it’s amazing really recommend slow cooked roast lamb with garlic

tittysprinkles · 15/06/2020 21:33

We have one and it's amazing. I have never used it but my husband uses it regularly all year round, the food that comes off it is amazing, so smokey and tender!

Cherrysoup · 15/06/2020 21:39

Do it. My DH bloody loves his, fiddles with it to get a proper seal, buys accessories all the time. Be warned, they weigh a fuck ton, easy to move on the wheels, tho.

mbosnz · 15/06/2020 21:58

He'd be happy as a pig in mud if you did. . . it's serious bbq cred'.

mamakoukla · 17/06/2020 02:24

Should add we use it year round including in the winter snows. Cooks Christmas turkey up a treat after a 12 h brining

Colycola · 20/06/2020 15:03

Thanks! Ordered the large plus the cheapest surround I could get.
