Can I ask if anyone has heard of it knows anything about it .

I have found my ds(13 ) has been on it not happy with some of the messages but really never heard of it . He is asleep so can’t talk to him

I know my DH uses it to talk to people he plays online games with. I think they can exchanges typed messages either during or not during a game... there's an app for it or you can have it open in a separate window on a PC

DD uses it to chat with her uni mates now they're all far flung. I don't know how it differs from other platforms for doing that sort of thing.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 14/06/2020 23:53

Best thing might be to download the app or sign in on a pc and test it with a friend.

I've used it for a few years mainly for gaming but my DC use it so it's easy to get a response from them if I message them on it.

We often use it to chat when playing board games together online when in different places/rooms.

It doesn't concern me like eg houseparty does.

But it is possible to share screens so someone would need to understand not to sign into anything while someone could see their password etc.

Its a chat forum for mainly online gaming. People can make their own servers and they can upload photos and take screen shots. So it’s not just chatting. You need to go in and look at the privacy settings. You c a also decide who can msg you. So people could send really dodgy pics.

My teen DS and his friends use it to chat because they are all v into gaming and apparently they can do gaming stuff/ chat on it.

I check his chats and online activity regularly and I've not seen anything that concerns me. However, he and his mates are v sensible/ geeky! But I've not seen anything bad on the wider gaming chats either...... yet!

You can voice chat on it too.

SuperLoudPoppingAction · 15/06/2020 11:50

And video chat.

Anything that would be a concern on chat apps in general would be a concern here. Eg know who you're connected to, privacy settings etc

Thank you for all your help.We have had a conversation about safe chatting online .

They are taught they have no idea who they are talking to at school however they watch tick tock so thing they know them , he has been speaking to you tubers, thinks they are safe. So we have gone back to his teacher secondary school was sent to prison fir the obvious so you don’t know anyone.

He has been removed for all electronics whilst I am working but going to come up with some safe guide lines with him as I can control a lot here but he has to learn how to manage the online world.

Discord is like a voice and text-based platform, where you can join an already made server through their name, or a link. It is used for the online streaming of games majorly. And then people use it for talking to each other on a voice call in a group during playing games with each other. It was how it is intended to use.
