Hello all,
I'm an absolute wine novice (clearly I like it but just buy a basic NZ Sauvingon)

I'd like to buy our HT and Deputy Head a bottle of wine at the end of term. What can I buy that's a sort of fail safe that most people will like but also think, oooh nice, I wouldn't have bought it myself. Happy to spend up to £20 a bottle.

Any help gratefully received!

A Sancerre is my go to! They are aren’t as run of the mill as many other grape varieties and usually start at about £14-16 a bottle. Definitely something not everyone would just pick up from their local tesco each week! I’m with you on the NZ Sauvignon Blanc as I have a glass of Wairau Cove in my hand!!

There are some very nice NZ Sauvignon's - I like Dog Point and the Cloudy Bay ones if I'm splashing out.

Or a voucher might be better then they can pick their own (or they might not drink alcohol!).

Thanks for the suggestions.

I don't feel right giving a voucher. Which is weird because I contribute to the class teacher voucher! It's more just a gesture of thanks for their hard work.

Love a glass of Wairau cove!

I agree with sancerre or cloudy bay. Hard to go wrong with a sauvignon blanc, either new world or old world.

Waitrose or Majestic would be good places to shop, and my suggestions for nice gifts for people who like wine would be :

Red : Chateauneuf du Pape or Rioja Réserva.

White : Chablis or Alsace Riesling.

Fizz : English sparkling wines are very highly rated. The soil & climate is similar to the parts of France which produce Champagne.

@Agelikewine your username is great!

Chablis sounds good. Also like the idea of English sparkling wine!

A Californian Zinfandel is always a good choice.

We live in France - no shotage of nice wine here - but it is always a lovely treat to go home to the UK and have more of a world selection.
