Cloth nappies?

grannydingle · 14/06/2020 16:13

I'm seriously debating switching to cloth nappies. My daughter is 10months. I'm getting so confused by everything online, can anyone give me a dumbed down guise? What do I need etc

You need a bucket with a air tight lid to store smellies in, and some nappies, that's it! May as well use reusable wipes too.

All in one nappies are great- they just go on like disposables.

This is a great website:

I now use terry squares and they are saving a fortune.

I don't know why more mums don't use them, they are easy to wash, dry quickly and fit all sizes :-)

  • Terry Squares and wraps: cheapest but a little bit more hassle and fairly bulky
  • all in twos (a fitted Terry cloth/bamboo nappy with a wrap over the top) - excellent containment and absorbency so good for overnight nappies. Again a bit more hassle, especially if baby is a wriggler
  • pocket nappies (a waterproof wrap with a pocket which you put the absorbent core into) - my personal favourite. If you pre-stuff them they are as convenient as an all in one/disposable but also have the ability to dry quickly when taken apart and you can adjust the absorbency. A good daytime option. Velcro easiest for little babies but poppers harder for older babies/toddlers to undo.
  • all in ones - convenient but can be a bit more pricey, slower to dry and not as absorbent in my experience.

There are loads of good brands out there (I love bumgenius) but part of the reason I love pocket nappies is that even the cheapies off amazon and ebay are good as long as you get the absorbency of what you're stuffing them with right. I tend to stuff cheap pocket nappies with bumgenius pre-folds!

Sorry for errors in formatting/punctuation/grammar - I'm feeding a teething grumpy baby at the same time 😂

I use terry squares or shaped Terry nappies like little lambs/motherease one size with motherease air flow wraps/nature babies wraps/little lamb wraps. I've used all kinds of nappies but these work best for me. Super easy to wash and dry.

I've used all in one. It was great at first, but as the baby got bigger, it started to leak and really difficult to dry. Said it was ok to tumble dry, but if I did every time, it would have lasted way shorter. I wish I've chosen the separate ones.

See if your local area has a nappy library where you can borrow a selection of nappies to work out what works for you. My friends have the mios and work well for her but not for me. I prefer the pockets where I can mix and match what boosters I have depending on what we are doing. Also look at reusable wipes. Much nicer on skin.
