Is this a thing?

Determing things on the outcome of something unrelated.
Not sure how to explain this properly.
An example.could be if a scrunched up paper is thrown into a bin, then the day will be good. If it misses, you could then change the rules to say if the next three throws get in then it negates the one that missed and it will be a good day. Or, If a certain score on a mobile game is reached then the test will be passed.
Does that make sense?
Is this a thing most people do?

I do sometimes and i used to do it a lot when i'm mentally unwell. I think its a form of ocd at the ecxtreme or superstition.

AmelieTaylor · 14/06/2020 11:59

Yes it is and I'm sure it'll have a name.

I think even those that do it though, really know it's rubbish.

Except maybe those with genuine (as in diagnosed) OCD.

Why do you ask?

heartsonacake · 14/06/2020 12:00

No, it’s not a thing most people do. Basing an outcome on something unrelated isn’t healthy.

MagisCapulus · 14/06/2020 12:14

Interesting. So it's a thing but not necessarily a good thing.
I did wonder if it had a name.

And yes it is obviously irrational. A ball of paper cannot determine whether it will be a good day.

It's definitely a thing. Sonething I do when more anxious / stressed.

NameChange84 · 14/06/2020 12:19

I had this from being a toddler. Was diagnosed with OCD at 3.

MagisCapulus · 14/06/2020 12:48

Could it be and asd thing rather than and OCD thing?

I.am.just musing about dd, btw.

I do this. I don't know if others do - I am self aware enough to know it sounds a bit weird, but when I am doing it, it makes perfect sense to me.

I used to work in SEN. I’ve not come across the type of behaviour you described in relation to autism, although rituals are important it’s more about routine/habit rather than thinking you will have bad luck or something bad will happen if you don’t see a certain “sign” or perform a behaviour.

I did this as a child too. I wonder if it came from a belief in the magical, being superstitious etc. The belief that I had the power to change the future before realising as an older child /adult that I couldn’t.

I also had a thing where I would have to do it think things in even numbers. So for instance if I thought about swinging on a swing I’d have to imagine that same thought 4 times or 8 times or 4x4 times... I had a thing with the number 4.
I grew out of it.

I’d say it’s linked to OCD for sure. But could also be something harmless they grow out of.

Zaphodsotherhead · 14/06/2020 14:05

I think it comes from a desire to impose control over uncontrollable things. So it happens to someone when they feel that they lack any form of control in their lives, or need to control every last little thing in order to feel safe.

Like people who place absolute faith in lucky objects or routines, which can spill over into OCD behaviours.

LynetteScavo · 14/06/2020 14:05

I have to put my left shoe in first or something bad will happen. And other silly things (I never step on a crack on the floor after taking communion, although nothing bad would happen if I did). I don't have any OCD but could see it could have developed. Teenage DD is saying she is OCD about somethings and I can see should could get quite bad, but I'm not sure how to stop it in it's tracks. At least she has a name for it which I never did. The odd things I do started when I was about 6yo looking into the gift shop window in Stratford.

CheeseSammich · 14/06/2020 14:18

Yes I've done this ever since I can remember. I have anxiety and it gets worse when I'm under a lot of stress. It is a form of OCD and a way of feeling more in control when things seem out of control. I have it with numbers, left and right, even colours Hmm I obviously know it's complete rubbish when I'm doing it but somehow helps. Look up OCD rituals.

JustC · 14/06/2020 14:41

I think it is possibly an OCD thing. Not bad or good. Potentially bad if it takes over ones life to the point of affecting job or social interraction. But as you describe it, I would say is not that bad.
