I'm already vegetarian so not eating eggs would be something I could do easily.

But what is the problem? Why are people so flabberfasted that an animal product is an animal product? What did you think it was? Why does it matter if it's fertilised or not? It's still part of a chickens reproduction. I don't get it?

NailsNeedDoing · 14/06/2020 11:07

My view point is being questioned which is completely fair enough, I question myself too! By I’m only talking from a personal perspective, not everyone becomes vegetarian for the same reasons.

The male chicks thing is a good point that I hadn’t given much thought to tbh because I didn’t become veggie for ethical reasons, I became veggie because I just didn’t find eating dead animals appealing any more.

Why are the weirdo frothers trying to get a pile on going and dishing insults out ?

It didn't occur to me they'd be cocks in with hens either...... especially those that are sold to supermarkets. OTOH the ones I get from my uncles allotment there's a good chance they'll be fertilised as he has a cockerel to keep his ladies happy.

It won't stop me eating eggs. I can't say I care much.

Some people don't like the thought of it and will be enough to put them off eating eggs and that's ok. It affects nobody but them, it doesn't make them anything Hmm

Honestly Hmm no need for the knobishness on here. It's not a good look. And no wonder we have such a problem with kids being bullies when they're supposedly adult parents behave the way they do. 🙄

CaraDune · 14/06/2020 11:09

My understanding (which could be wrong, I am a townie through and through) is that a few cockerels in with the hens keeps the hens laying more eggs.

NailsNeedDoing · 14/06/2020 11:09

I'm beginning think that a month on a mixed farm should be compulsory for every schoolchild.

A month seems excessive, but I’d be right behind this idea! If it happened I think we’d end up with much much higher welfare standards, and we’d end up with a lot more vegetarian children.

Sandybval · 14/06/2020 11:10

We incubated and hatched chicks at school, and took eggs in from home to look at them through candlelight. We did go to a farm quite regularly, but then again it was extremely local so wasn't a huge logistical issue, it was valuable though.

NowIKnowWhataTVDinnerFeelsLike · 14/06/2020 11:12

Surely fertilised eggs is a good thing because the chickens have been able to roam and interact. If you want to guarantee unfertilised eggs then you can buy battery farmed eggs and be sure they've not had horrible cockerels doing the dirty with them Hmm

As far as I can see, nobody has told anyone else they're being knobbish. They're just questioning other people's views. It's okay for you to tell people they're weirdos and tell them they're being knobs, though Hmm

midnightstar66 · 14/06/2020 11:16

Surely commercial egg producers only keep female chickens even in a free range environment? I don't think you need to stop eating eggs - just avoid local and private sources if the thought bothers you.

GarlicSoup · 14/06/2020 11:17

@Packamack

People who are so divorced from the reality of what eggs actually are shouldn't be allowed to eat eggs.

They should be restricted to food derived from petrochemicals. That should save all the ewwing and sick noises.

FFS.

@lamahaha why are you bringing religion into it?

minniebinnie · 14/06/2020 11:23

@nailsneeddoing thanks for taking my question in good grace. On my part I probably forget that not every vegetarian is coming from an ethical angle & some just don't like meat etc. Fair enough.

LillianBland · 14/06/2020 11:24

@GrumpyMiddleAgedWoman

I'm beginning think that a month on a mixed farm should be compulsory for every schoolchild.

The degree of estrangement from the countryside of the average person in the UK is staggering.

I totally agree. My chum didn’t believe me when I told him that baked beans aren’t orange and peas aren’t dark green. The number of people that think chickens come out of a chickens bum hole, is astonishing.
SpillTheTeaa · 14/06/2020 11:25

Buda did you not feel it was slightly heavier than a normal egg should feel?
I always get freaked out when there is a double yolk and now this!

Crinkle77 · 14/06/2020 11:25

@fuckinghellthisshit

Are you serious? How can adults not know that eggs are often fertilised? I am literally stunned. And now some of you are going to stop eating them? Why?

I don't think this is necessarily correct. Sometimes having a cockerel can really stress hens out, which lowers production, especially if the cockerel is a larger breed than the hens.

We've had hens with and without cockerels over the years and I can't say I've ever noticed a difference in egg production.

macaroniandpizza · 14/06/2020 11:25

Of all the things to get wound up about... eggs ive seen it all now Grin

Nice user name @whatwould, I don't think Jesus would do that ⬆️😆

Pinkblueberry · 14/06/2020 11:28

How is this news to people? Chickens living with cockerel = possible fertilised eggs. It’s literally the basics of the birds and the bees.

SchadenfreudePersonified · 14/06/2020 11:28

I've twice cracked eggs and found a chick in (I suppose twice in 45 years isn't bad.)

It's the risk you take with free range.

Icantrememebrtheartist · 14/06/2020 11:31

Well said! Whatwouldyoudo

minniebinnie · 14/06/2020 11:31

I volunteered at a farm for 2 weeks. I found it useful, it didn't make me want to give up meat but it did make me understand the importance about where I bought my meat & eggs from.

Cluckycluck · 14/06/2020 11:31

@midnightstar66

With the quantity of poultry commercial farms keeps its impossible to get rid of all cockerels in a free range environment. It only takes one cockerel in with hens to get fertilised eggs. Obviously some farms have autosexing breeds and the male chick's are dispatched immediately.

Some chicken and duck breeds are harder to sex than others so cockerels are missed.

Crinkle77 · 14/06/2020 11:32

I always think of eggs as being like chicken period so they’re just not an appealing thing to eat, unlike cake, so I do use farm shop eggs as ingredients

Many farm shops buy their eggs in from egg merchants. You're not really getting anything different from what's in the supermarkets.

LockdownLove · 14/06/2020 11:34

DS bought some refrigerated supermarket quail eggs. Put them under a lamp as an experiment.

Flo, Betty, Gloria and Bert now live in our garden Grin.
