It’s WEIRD. Zero social distancing or masks or anything. The whole stadium just gave essential workers a standing ovation. It’s strangely emotional!

Kind of crazy to think this is one of the largest gathering of people at any point around the world right now.

If the London Marathon actually goes ahead this year, I'll eat my hat. I had a place for the Vitality 10k which was scheduled for Bank Holiday Monday at the end of May. It's run by the London Marathon team, I think, so I suppose if the Marathon did go ahead I'd have to consider whether to do the 10k. Eek. However, given my speed, I could go to the back of the last wave and I'd be comfortably apart from everybody else for the whole 10k. Grin

FenceFuckery · 14/06/2020 07:29

We’ve had over 3 weeks with no new cases, and we have zero active cases so unless there is a hidden outbreak somewhere it’s business as usual. They’ve been doing extensive community testing.

We’ve obviously not built up any kind of herd immunity so if it sneaks back in somehow we’ll be a bit fucked to be honest. I really hope this doesn’t mean we have closed borders for years until a safe vaccine is developed. They are letting people in though, if they tick enough of the right boxes and quarantine for 3 weeks. They’ve let James Cameron and his Avatar crew in, as well as other people who will make a big impact to the economy.

CoVid is still alive and well, I am amazed any country would think this is a good idea! Confused
I'm with pigeon here. It's too early.

I can't wait for this to be the U.K.!

nowahousewife · 14/06/2020 07:47

My cousin who was there said it was "bloody awesome!!"

EnlightenedOwl · 14/06/2020 07:48

We always go to a big horse racing meeting in November crossing fingers we will get there but losing hope tbh.

lemmathelemmin · 14/06/2020 07:55

New Zealand haven't developed any kind of immunity right? What happens when it gets in?

squeekums · 14/06/2020 07:57

South Australia but we won't now that the government has decided to open our borders to Victoria

Good, then Port and Crows shouldn't have to do this stupid hub shit, leaving our teams at a disadvantage in the AFL
We can't live locked away forever. Aus is in a good place to start properly opening. Remember, we may never have a vaccine and corona will be a part of life. We have to learn to live with it and that includes big crowds and events

sashh · 14/06/2020 07:59

Someone needs to clone Jacinda Ardern and put the clones in place of Boris, Trump and a few others.

SockYarn · 14/06/2020 08:02

Cheltenham races was the same with 60,000 two weeks later boom!

How poorly educated are some people about all this?

If nobody has it, nobody will be able to pass it on and there will be no "boom". Hmm

FiveShelties · 14/06/2020 08:03

@lemmathelemmin there is no immunity here, but is there anywhere?

We will have to open the border soon, tourism is a huge part of our economy.

TyrannosaurusBex · 14/06/2020 08:07

I’m in Guernsey, we’re into our 7th week without a new case and life is largely back to normal, but we’re still limiting social gatherings to 30 people and restaurants etc are keeping records of contact details. I think that’s pretty sensible, although I am looking forward to next Saturday when we really will be back to normal within our Bailiwick Bubble.

eaglejulesk · 14/06/2020 08:07

CoVid is still alive and well, I am amazed any country would think this is a good idea!

There are no active cases in NZ, and there hasn't been a new case for 23 days.

vanillandhoney · 14/06/2020 08:08

Why are people bringing up Cheltenham?

If New Zealand has no activate case and no infections, then how can it be spread?

mrbob · 14/06/2020 08:18

There isn't any COVID there. So it is entirely safe! This isn't low levels of transmission, it is no disease to spread
pigeon999 · 14/06/2020 08:21

It only takes one person to be infected attending something on that scale to cause another spike.
I am incredulous that anyone would think that CoVid has 'gone' and they can get back to hold mass gatherings. Look at China today. Beijing are now closing whole districts, we are seeing second waves in SK and Iran. The idea that NZ are done and dusted with CoVid is for the birds, and those that know nothing at all about how coronavirus spreads - and will continue to spread.

We shouldn't be having any mass gatherings anywhere until there is a vaccine and/or herd immunity has been achieved in the host country, to do anything else is irresponsible.

Well in SA and the NT we could basically go back to normal (including big events) if we kept our borders shut with almost no risk. And if we waited a little longer until we were happy the other states had no community spread then the whole of Australia and NZ could open up. As it is the chances of a bubble including any bits of Australia and NZ have just taken a hit. And the NT is much less likely to open its borders to SA if they will end up with Victorians up there. The NT is so vulnerable. If on the other hand SA had kept its borders closed to the eastern states then the NT could open to SA with virtually no risk. Victoria very clearly has community spread going on. I would rather have low risk normal life in SA than be able to go to Melbourne tbh. But that is just my view
mrbob · 14/06/2020 08:23

Pigeon999 nowhere else had completely eliminated it. There is NO COVID in NZ and providing they keep their borders closed there is no way for it to get in. In China the levels were low but not zero. You are looking from the view that there is still some out there in the community. There isn't. SO even if 10000000 people got together there is none to spread!

FatalSecrets · 14/06/2020 08:25

If New Zealand has no activate case and no infections, then how can it be spread?

Because asymptomatic transmission and infection is possible. No documented active cases doesn’t necessarily equate to no cases.

The NRL has been back playing for a couple of weeks now behind closed doors (although slightly relaxed this week). A match this morning has been postponed due to failed Coronavirus protocol.

GreyishDays · 14/06/2020 08:26

It looks like countries that have had many cases still only have around 5% immunity though the population, so I don’t think you’re at a big disadvantage.

WaffleCash · 14/06/2020 08:28

There is NO COVID in NZ

Have they tested everyone? Surely there's a possibility, even if it's remote, that there could be some asymptomatic people about?

Lily193 · 14/06/2020 08:31

There is NO COVID in NZ and providing they keep their borders closed there is no way for it to get in.

But they can't keep their borders closer indefinitely with tourism as their main economy. Eliminating cases with such a tiny population and closed borders would be easily possible for any country. Managing the next step successfully is the real challenge.

My worry for New Zealand is there won’t be any herd immunity through the population. Will they have to stay shut off from the world forever or until there is a vaccine? They had better hope they get one soon.

GreyishDays · 14/06/2020 08:34

I think they’ve been properly tracing cases and supporting isolation, so the last cases’ contacts will be knows and monitored.

Their next step is important, but only as much as ours. We’re aiming to get rid of it too. If we manage, well be in the same position as them.

Here’s an example of the population immunity levels I mentioned, France.
