Living somewhere between Edinburgh and Glasgow

Where would you live?

DH wants to move to Scotland in the next few years once DC have finished school. Don't really want to live in a city, but don't want to live in a little village. His job is transferable, I can get a job when we move. The plan is to sell up and rent until we are settled in an area then buy.

I'm familiar with Borders on the East, Edinburgh and Glasgow, so would be happy to live around there. Both of us drive, so commuting hopefully won't be a problem.

Linlithgow is between Glasgow and Edinburgh. Has a train station too and trains every fifteen minutes or so. It is nice. The rest of the central belt isn’t great to be honest. If it was me and I could afford it I would ideally stick to Edinburgh/ South Queensferry.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/06/2020 17:47

Honestly, it all depends on your budget and what kind of socialising you like to do (if any).

If your kids are staying with you after high school I’d be looking for easy transport options for uni/colleges etc.

Definitely come do some scouting around!

MegoLego · 13/06/2020 17:53

Edinburgh is out of our budget, seems to be on par with London prices for a decent house.

We won't be moving until DC have moved out or at least at Uni. One of them has SN so will be living with us indefinitely.

Linlithgow, or parts of Falkirk are nice (and cheaper)

Tavannach · 13/06/2020 18:06

Killearn is nice - closer to Glasgow. Bridge of Allan and Dunblane are also lovely.

MegoLego · 13/06/2020 18:10

Thank you. We have friends in Motherwell, but not sure of the area as only visited once and they live in a high rise, so hard to ascertain the area from up a height.

SIL lives in Linlithgow. It’s a lovely town although you’d need to go to Livingston or Edinburgh for ‘big’ shopping.
Plenty to do around there and some lovely walks.

Jupiter15 · 13/06/2020 18:22

The central belt between Edinburgh and Glasgow isn’t that nice tbh, although there will be exceptions. Have heard Linlithgow is nice, as pp said. Parts of the Borders are nice but fairly remote obviously not between Edinburgh and Glasgow. There is the borders railway though so easy commute to Edinburgh if you’re near a station.

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 13/06/2020 18:30

I wouldn’t personally be happy staying in Motherwell.
I had friends that lived there and we never visited because they always wanted out/away from antisocial neighbours etc.

That said you could probably get a great house on the outskirts for a very reasonable price and you’d have friends nearby 🤷🏻‍♀️

drucillavanamstel · 13/06/2020 18:35

Helenburgh is a very nice place to live, it's got a nice sea front and lovely shops around the town. Good dog walking areas, if you have a dog. 30 and 40 mins to the nearest shopping centres and then 45 minutes into glasgow city centre. Its 15 mins away from Loch Lomond, where theres also a sea life centre and Balloch park. The house prices aren't the cheapest you can get in Scotland, they're not as expensive as Edinburgh though! But it's a lovely place or if you look at houses in Dumbarton (16 mins down the road) then those are a bit less. I'm sure they do riding for people with special needs in Helensburgh also, I had a friend who volunteered there once. I'm planning on looking around that area when we come to buy a house, I loved my time there. They have lovely farm shops nearby too

How about Sterling!!

Tavannach · 13/06/2020 18:38

Sorry, I misread your post. I thought you were looking for a village. Stirling maybe? Or Musselburgh on the outskirts of Edinburgh.

mylittlesandwich · 13/06/2020 18:39

In nearer glasgow than Edinburgh and you won't want to live here lol. I used to live in East Kilbride which is technically a town but it's pretty big. Again nearer to glasgow though.

weegiemum · 13/06/2020 18:40

If you go north a bit, Perth and surroundings is nice. 1hr or so from Glasgow and Edinburgh, got most facilities, inc for SEN (my brother with sen lives there). Easy into the highlands, but right on the motorway for heading south (I'm from the area but now live in Glasgow which I prefer). Stirling is also nice as long as you go for the right part and closer to Ed/Gla.

stellarsky · 13/06/2020 18:49

Biggar/Lanark and surrounding is lovely, good schools, rolling hills, local shops. An hour to either Glasgow or Edinburgh.
Linlithgow is the usual go to but think around that and there's lots out there. Look more south of the middle and some really lovely wee villages.

Defaultuser · 13/06/2020 19:37

If you want to be in easy reach of both Edinburgh and Glasgow I would personally go for Linlithgow or Bridge of Allan.

rockingaroundthemulberrybush · 13/06/2020 19:40

A massive vote for East Lothian. Beautiful villages, loads of history, stunning beaches and walks.

Lordfrontpaw · 13/06/2020 19:42

Sterling?

Sunbeam18 · 13/06/2020 19:44

Linlithgow is really nice, but quite expensive as its on the train line between Glasgow
& Edinburgh and is the nicest place on that line.
If you can live a commutable distance from either city (rather than both) then I'd suggest looking at North Berwick.

StoorieHoose · 13/06/2020 19:46

Stirling isn't a village!

What about Auchterarder? Bridge if Allan or Dunblane are nice too.

StoorieHoose · 13/06/2020 19:47

Sorry I miss read the post that mentioned village and Stirling

Christinayangtwistedsister · 13/06/2020 19:49

Motherwell is a dump, I wouldn't go near it

IKEA888 · 13/06/2020 19:49

Ayrshire coast is cheaper than a lot of places and v close to Glasgow. excelle
nd transport links to Glasgow.
lovely rural area with all you need nearby

sweetkitty · 13/06/2020 19:50

Only good thing about Motherwell is it’s location ideal for M74, M8, M9 and direct route to London I’ve been in London in 4 hours 40 mins. We chose it years ago as it was cheap for housing there was a reason for that but were kind of stuck here now until kids finish school.

Calledyoulastnightfromglasgow · 13/06/2020 19:51

Can you be more specific? Do
You need to be between Edinburgh and Glasgow or just somewhere quite accessible in the central belt?

Between Edinburgh and Glasgow is West Lothian and greater Glasgow. Nice bits but probably not the first choice.

Small town or village? City eg Perth or Stirling?

Are you into countryside or city culture? Sporty or arts?
