I need the charity shops to open

And I haven't even done a massive clear out! Just a few times here and there since lock down that I've decluttered a cupboard or the kids have definitely grown out of clothes/shoes.

Now there's several bags waiting to go to the charity shops. And I'm having to tidy the room that they're in because someone (single) is coming to stay. So I've had to move all bags to clutter up a different room. When really I've mentally thrown all that stuff out.

First world problem! Especially in a pandemic. But don't want to be unenvironmental and landfill it.

In theory they can open on Monday, although I am not sure they all are. If you are England that is. However, I think they will have rules about people donating as they know they will be inundated with stuff after everyone has had a clear out. also everything will need to be quarantined!

Really? How did I miss that news, that would be great.

Yes I wouldn't want to be facing the onslaught of pent up donations though!

This is from The British Heart Foundation website:

Free cycle/ facebook market place/ local selling groups. I listed pile of stuff for free, gone in 2 hours. The onslaught of messages was slightly overwhelming- but worth the head space after.

If you just want to get rid of them, you could try bundling them and offering them on facebook freecycle or buy/sell sites.

Thanks ineedaholiday, useful link. So I might be posting my donations!

Alternatively, the clothing recycling bins at our nearest big supermarket do appear to be being emptied regularly - we’ve taken a couple of bags down with us when taking our recycling (our council seems to be picking up recycling/rubbish at the moment at their own leisure Hmm). Ours is an Oxfam bin and had definitely been emptied in between trips. Not ideal if it’s nice stuff they’d get value from selling on I suppose but good for basics (lots of ours were bits that were wearable but not expensive in the first instance).

givebackbox.org.uk/ Amazon have a donation collection scheme

applepineapple · 13/06/2020 17:20

Try the Olio app, local people will collect from you for free

Most Charity shops will open in phases my DH runs 2 and he hasn't been given a date yet for his, hopefully mid July. Please be aware that even if the Charity shops are open they may have restrictions on how much, what type of Donations they can take and may also have restrictions on what day they can take them, my advise is to decide which charity you want to donate to, contact the shop or look on their FB page to see when they are opening and if and when they can accept donations, otherwise you may be disappointed

chillied · 13/06/2020 18:30

Thanks Oldsu and others, yes looks like I'll have to phone ahead and make absolutely sure before donating.

If you have an Air Ambulance furniture shop near you, most are already open, taking donations. Not clothes though.

Mnthrowaway20202 · 13/06/2020 19:14

Charity shops are going to be overwhelmed, I wonder how they’re going to handle the influx on donations. I wouldn’t be surprised if they place restrictions or periodically won’t accept them

AnnaSW1 · 13/06/2020 19:16

They are unlikely to want stuff according to BBC news. Every one is going to be trying to leave so much stuff
