Career change/future proofing...help!

First post but have lurked for a while Smile

Currently working in role I studied at postgrad level for (academic research), but I’m just not finding it as fulfilling as I thought I would. I’m also working away from home, though not during CoVid, travelling back at weekends and it’s exhausting, and a financial drain to boot!
I’m thinking about how to future proof my career, given that Higher Ed is in for a rough few years - my institution is most likely cutting all research time over the next year, meaning I’ll be shifted on to teaching or have my role cut. I’m fixed term so this would be pretty easy for them do to save money.
I’m not due back on campus until Sept, but I’m dreading what the next academic year is going to bring already.

Getting to the future proofing part, I’m thinking about retraining as a MH nurse in my hometown. My current role/background is in psychology so I have some relevant knowledge and feel like front like work would allow me to make more of a difference then I currently do writing papers and satiating university admin requirements.
Plus, nursing seems to be a pretty stable career with plenty of post training options, which I feel like I don’t have right now.
I’d be 34 when I finishing training if I started this year.
Thoughts very much welcome as I’m so confused about what to do!

Would you not want to go into psychology?

Mental health nursing seems to offer a wealth of opportunities

Thanks @Fatted
My current role is psychology research, I wouldn’t be looking to try and get into practitioner psychology as it’s crazy competitive.

@Somethingkindaoooo yes it seems that way, it’s one of the things that attracts me to it.

Bumping in case anyone else has any ideas...
