Is anyone else just NOT able to do the news anymore?

I found myself looking at totally inane stories this morning about 'slebs' I've never heard of, looking at the local animal shelter page (a dangerous pastime for me), stories that would normally have NO interest for me, just because I feel like a can't watch any more bad news.

I'm a bit of a news fiend normally and I KNOW so many things are hugely important right now and of course mustn't be ignored, but maybe I just need a day off. It just feels relentless and I'm a bit done.

Me too. Especially the morning tv news shows. The relentless hectoring is tiring and pointless. Of course mistakes have been made, but Piers/Susannah/Louise wotsit on the other side just ricochet from one point of view to the other just to get a “gotcha” moment. Eg they were baying for schools to close, and now they are screeching about them not opening.

I think the media (including newspapers) has played a disgraceful part in this whole crisis.

And yes, I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time browsing the Blue Cross sites, and snivelling at the poor animals’ back stories....

Livedandlearned · 12/06/2020 09:58

Me too. I feel increasingly sad and honestly wish I'd never had children that have to grow up in this world

octobersky19 · 12/06/2020 09:59

Me! I've just found out I'm pregnant, I have an 8 month old and we've barely left the house in months, I feel like we're in a little bubble and the news makes outside my bubble look terrifying. This year has been horrendous

Yep. I’m done. I can’t summon the energy any more to read the news. Even my FB is exhausting. But I think that’s more general ennui with the whole COVID situation rather than a permanent change. I felt like that about Brexit coverage too.

Can I recommend the Economist’s daily The Intelligence podcast for a much calmer take on worldwide news.

Totally agree @IrmaFayLear. I've had to hide some threads on here too - the baiting, goading etc is exhausting even to read.

Recently, I try not to read bad news in general. I am only interested in content that gives strength and inspires. A lot of negativity is now in the world.

Aquamarine1029 · 12/06/2020 11:47

Yep. I’m done.

As am I. I am sick to fucking death of the world right now and I decided I need a massive break from the endless bombardment of shit news.

TooTrueToBeGood · 12/06/2020 11:51

Shit doesn't stop happening just because you choose to stick your head in the sand. All that does is prevent you having any idea what is going on in the world and why.

I read or hear the basics once or twice a day, but that’s it.

I usually have Classic FM on for much of the day, but have to keep switching off when the news comes on. Mind you I do that for the most irritating ads too - which is most of them.

You can keep up without being relentlessly bombarded with it every half hour.
