So confused about how to make formula on the to

Peterbishopssarcasticsmile · 12/06/2020 09:49

Baby is on antireflux formula which doesn't come ready made
I use a perfect prep normally

I have a flask and formula pots
Can I take boiling water with me in the flask, powdered formula and then fill another bottle with cooled boiled water and kind of mimic th perfect prep when out - so use the boiling water for a hot shot and then top up with the cooled boiled water?

I would have to find a way to keep the cooled boiled water cool as it's going to be a hot day...

I've thoroughly confused myself with how to do it safely

I did this when DS was older, about 6 or 7 months. I personally would be reluctant to do it that way with a very young baby, but I wouldn’t think you irresponsible if I saw you doing it - the risks are pretty minimal.
I don’t know if the formula you use is different but most formula can be kept out of the fridge 2 hours once made from hot water. If you know you will use it within two I would make it at home and take with. Or just make it while your out but with time to spare for cooling.

If you're making 5oz bottle then first thing in the morning put 4oz of boiling water in your babies bottle. Then when you're out add the powder and 1oz of boiling water. Check the temp it should be fine. If I am going to use a bottle within an hour then I just make it at home with my perfect prep and use it when I'm out.

Just need a second bottle like you're using for the hot water. A thermos flak will keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold.

We did exactly this for 2 kids (on prescription formula, so no cartons etc available). It worked perfectly as the temp stays above the required temp for ages.
Wolfgirrl · 12/06/2020 11:06

I just took premade cartons if I was going out, much easier and less hassle.

Sorry 🙈 missed that bit

You can get a box of powder called carobel from the pharmacy, think it's 3.99. It is the same as anti-reflux milk but can be added to BM or ready made formula.

GiantPinesAhem · 12/06/2020 13:17

I think some people don't have experience of reflux milk. Some of them you cannot make up with cooled water, and some you cannot keep for more than 30 minutes after mixing- and believe me, some of them are genuinely vile anything after that, just cleaning the bottles would have me close to vomiting.

Your method was what I used when using one that couldn't be done with cooled, when I had one that could then I profiled bottles with boiled water and rapid cooled them and used that.

duedatemistake · 12/06/2020 13:42

Use ready made with the right amount of carobel in it’s the exact same as the reflux formula x

Bingaling30 · 12/06/2020 13:46

We used aptamil anti reflux and a perfect prep at home. When going out I used to fill the bottle with the cool water part from the machine and then take a flask and top up to the amount of oz with boiling water and added the powder.

It wasn't meant to be made with a hot shot like normal formula as it wouldn't dissolve properly.

Baby never got sick and it worked really well for us!

HappyGoLuckyHippo · 12/06/2020 13:52

Was also going to mention carobel, if that's an option. We had it on prescription from the GP (for reflux) so no cost. You'd be able to add some to the pre-made carton formula for the same effect.
Other than that, I think your method would be ok as long as the flask water is over 70 degrees obviously.

TabbyMumz · 12/06/2020 13:53

Yes op, you can do exactly that. Or make it with all boiling water out of a flask and wait for it to cool. You can always pop into a toilet somewhere and hold it under a cold tap. Alternatively, make it before you go out, and keep it cool in a cool bag, and warm up in a flask.

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2020 14:00

I used made up bootleg and a Fridge to Go. It key is bottles really cold for 8+ hours. I used to warm them up under my jumper!!

Years later I still use my fridge to go for packed lunches at work. I do about of driving around and it keeps food fresh all day.

Howzaboutye · 12/06/2020 14:03

The boiling water is to sterilise the formula powder. You only need enough to mix with the formula. So if you have the formula pre measured and a flask of water/ hot water from a coffee shop
Mix them. A good shake. Then add cooled boiled water from a separate flask.
Done!

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2020 14:14

Bootleg = bottle!!

TabbyMumz · 12/06/2020 14:16

Bikerunski...your link for fridgetogo is something completely different!

BikeRunSki · 12/06/2020 14:24

I shudder to think what it is @TabbyMumz, when I click it it works!! Should take you to a website called Save Our Sleep.

This is the Fridge to Go

Hi Op I used this when my lo was a baby a few years ago. It’s a bit faffy but I was a stickler for the correct water temp! www.amazon.co.uk/Bottle-Water-Cooler-Cool-Twister/dp/B0767HWHVY/ref=mp_s_a_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=nip+cool+twister&sprefix=nip+cool+&tag=mumsnetforu03-21&qid=1591969543&sr=8-1

SqidgeBum · 12/06/2020 19:35

I did this from day 1 with my DD. I simply bought two flasks. I would boil a kettle, let it cool, and then put the cooled boiled water in one flask. Then I boiled another kettle and filled it with boiling water. I had a formula tub from Asda for the formula. I had the formula measured out in each section. I would simply put the hot water in the bottle up to the same mark the prep machine goes to, then the formula, shake it, and top it up with the cooled water. Very quick and simple.

ChaseTheSun · 12/06/2020 19:44

My 6 month old was on Aptamil Pepti for reflux and we would have fully made up bottles stored in the fridge. We would make up 3 in advance in the morning for the day and 3 in the evening for overnight / first feed the next morning.
When we went out pre lockdown we would just take out a bottle in a cool bag with ice packs so it stayed perfectly cool, and took boiling water in a tommee tippee flask and then just placed the bottle into the large cup of boiling water to heat. Once warm we would then add her Gaviscon & Carobel & it was fine.
I should also say that I also made up bottles in advance with my 2 older children & both were perfectly fine with absolutely no reflux or digestive issues.
Hope this helps!

howsoonisnow85 · 12/06/2020 19:51

Does anyone know if instead of cooled boiled water for the cold bit, you could use bottled water or water from the fridge filtered bit instead?

Howzaboutye · 12/06/2020 20:53

Cooled boiled water.
Mineral water no, and with no knowledge of the cleanliness of your fridge filter, so that's a no too. Boiled tap water is it.

GiantPinesAhem · 13/06/2020 12:36

carobel is not always a suitable option depending on what the milk is that you are using.
