New mum lockdown need advice

My baby is nearly 11 weeks old and keeps being sick and really fussy after feeding, she has carobel in feeds

We have just started her on lactose free as advised by health Visitor

But I feel like due to all this lockdown HV or Drs wont help me, I'm a first time mum and have no support apart from over the phone but mo one knows what's best

Since on lactose free milk sick like cottage cheese
And seems to be harder to bring up is this good or bad?

And how do I help her she is constipated but everytime I mention it to GP or HV they dont seem to give me any solution

It's really getting me upset as I dont know if I'm doing the right or wrong thing and have no one around. R to reassure she's doing ok

If you think the sick is worse now then I would go back to what you were feeding her before.
If she is sick she may have reflux and you need to keep her upright for as long as possible after a feed and until she settles.
I'm not sure about constipation in a baby so young. You will have to speak to the go about that

Bicycle legs and clockwise tummy massage may help

Absolutely go back to the GP. Ask if there is one at your practice who specialises in child/mum medicine. I found the most wonderful GP at my practice via doing this. No one else was sympathetic or useful - and I didn't have a HV because she 'left' and no one replaced her and her sort of fell through the cracks.

Call them and go in.

What is carobel?

Lockdown has made it all a lot harder. Can you contact the Nct. They have feeding consultants that should be able to give you help and advice. Also speak to your hospital, there will be a feeding support team there who could help. They could also give you advice on whether you need to avoid lactose.

Doctors should help you if you’re struggling, but the teams at the hospital may be more help as they are specialising in that area.

I have always breastfed, so might be different. but sick like cottage cheese seems to happen if I wait a bit longer to wind her. Definitely a question for an expert.

Avoid massaging tummy within half an hour of feeding.

It’s really tough without the services we would normally have at the moment. I haven’t seen a hv at all, just telephone appointment once and they haven’t returned my calls.

Hope this helps :)

I'd try this milk or a hipp cambiotic.
Sounds like reflux to me. I'd also try infant gaviscon.

Also I'd say the thicker cottage cheese milk is bad. Babies need liquid at this stage not to bring up lumps. X

I was told Lactose intolerance is actually rather rare in babies. Have you looked at cows milk protein allergy. I would definitely ring the gp. My daughter had cmpa, gerd and silent reflux. She was on milk for allergy that was prescribed from the doctor, carobel to thicken it and ranitidine then omeprazole for the silent reflux. If she’s worse on the new milk I’d probably go back but I’d contact gp first. I feel for you because it was hard enough going through it with all the professionals helping me. I can’t imagine not being able to be referred to all the relevant consultants etc. Does she feed ok? Hope you find a sympathetic doctor who can help.

Thanks everyone

Her sick is less and she isn't throwing up bile so keeping more of her feed down, just this is thicker so I feel like she is struggling when it does happen if that makes sense. 🙈

Carobel is a thickening agent that the peadatrician gave us at the hospital to help her reflux, due to her only being newborn she only was taking little feeds then so the sickness wasn't as noticeable as it is now

I do the bycicle legs and tummy massages with her.... I also make sure when holding her we keep one hand on her belly hoping the warmth might help movement.

Me neither I havnt seen health Visitor or midwife since baby just a phone call to ask me if I had looked to see if my stitches are healing and if I'm able to keep a poo in for 15 mins

I understand drs and nurses working extra hard during this time, just a check up on her would be nice so I know she's doing ok

If it's lumpy then it's starting to be digested, so actual sick rather than spit-up, likely just because it's harder to get up so taking longer. Are you burping mid-feed? Here you tired gripe water or similar? Are you sure you're not overfeeding?

ButLittle · 12/06/2020 00:16

Actually if the new milk is helping then she might need less carobel which would also help with the constapation as it'll have proportionally more water.

saywhatwhatnow · 12/06/2020 00:18

It sounds more like reflux than an allergy as such. I would switch back to normal formula for now, as like a pp said lactose intolerance is exceptionally rare. I'd be pushing for ranitidine or omeprazole to try. If the sickness carried on then I would explore cmpa.

In my experience GPs are rubbish at this stuff, I saw three GPS with DS before ending up
In A&E and finally getter a diagnosis of severe silent reflux by a paediatric Dr there. Be pushy and tell them what you want to try!
