bbc news

Apparently 2.9m people could be eligible.

I think I'd be tempted if I were in their shoes!

We had this thread the other day.

I doubt many people would want to leave HK where, aside from the obvious horrendous situation with the police, the standard of living is much higher than in the UK and where people have one of the highest per capita incomes in the world. The UK doesn’t offer nearly as much in the way of career advancement.

Miljea · 11/06/2020 15:09

Could you link to that other thread, if possible, please?

Did the last racist thread about “Hong Kong people” get deleted by any chance?

TheCanterburyWhales · 11/06/2020 15:15

If you read the BBC article and the relevant law on BNO status, there's a lot of "may" "possibly" going on. Nationality and immigration law would have to be changed and the majority of BNO ppt holders don't even have the right to enter the UK without a visa at the moment.
So the racists can calm down about it for now I think.

Miljea · 11/06/2020 21:43

I'm about to be horribly racist and to categorise a whole bunch of people under one banner: I think the injection of HK Chinese talent, industriousness, eyes-on-the-prize attitude is just what we'll need, post Brexit.

We should be welcoming them!

Yup, you succeeded in being horribly racist.

Miljea · 12/06/2020 20:37

Er- in what way? Recognising well known characteristics of hard work and industriousness in the HK Chinese?

OP posts:
gobbynorthernbird · 12/06/2020 22:55

What, all 7 million of them possess those characteristics? It's an outdated racist stereotype.

ilovewinterpansies · 13/06/2020 05:45

Oh for god's sake.

I'm half white British and half Hong Kong Chinese. I've lived half my life in each place.

There are cultural differences. It's a real thing.

I have noticed the hardworking ethic of Hong Kong people in general. Yes there are some lazy Hong Kongers too. But overall I'd say the work ethic is very strong.

This observation is not racist.

Desiringonlychild · 13/06/2020 06:45

@gobbynorthernbird the standard working hours in Hong Kong are far longer. You are often expected to do unpaid overtime. Its the same in many Asian countries, 9 am -9 pm is average, 9am - 12 pm is hardworking, 9 am - 3 pm is ambitious. Obviously not for all 7 million of them but a lot of jobs in HK are finance related and do demand long hours

So if they worked in UK, even working 1-2 hours longer would be 'slacking' compared to what they are used to. 7/8 pm end is like heaven to them.

pigeon999 · 13/06/2020 06:48

I hope so, it would be great for this country, but I guess most will wait until after the pandemic.

NotGenerationAlpha · 13/06/2020 07:05

I think yes and no. I am from HK but my brother and I are NZ citizens. My SIL has also got a Taiwan passport. My parents didn’t stay their 3 years in NZ so they never naturalised and lost their residency when my brother and I left. They hated NZ and I doubt they will like the UK if they were young enough to migrate.

In the 90s lots of people migrated to Canada, Australia, and NZ. There were people then in key industries being given proper UK passports. My dad passed on that and chosen NZ instead. I don’t know the proportion of those who are born in HK who are also dual citizens. But there are a lot of us. It’s a middle class thing and almost half of my class at my secondary school left for overseas in the early 90s. Many of them has returned.

For those who aren’t dual citizens. Some will want to leave for a better life for their children. Others will be too disgusted by China so will want to leave. Then you have those who just complain but don’t want to change their lives so they won’t move. It’s hard to know how many will want to uproot their lives.

NotGenerationAlpha · 13/06/2020 07:07

The dual citizens part are the proportion who won’t come to the UK even if they are to leave. I know my brother prefer Taiwan over NZ. They have talked about retiring there. There is also Singapore which I hear many talked about.

Gosh people really do dig deep to be offended don't they Hmm
