Turning 18 should be an exciting time for anyone. I have a relative turning 18 in this weird time. Not only that, she is a young carer, and has experienced some tough times. I’d like to give her an uplifting book with a positive, empowering message.

She’s not a great reader, so nothing too literary or heavy, please. Thank you.

How to be a woman by Caitlin Moran?

Thanks, Barbara, that’s a good one.

I really enjoyed The Earth, My Butt and Other Big Round Things by Carolyn Mackler around that age. Also Last Chance by Sarah Dessen. They are easy to read and about finding yourself / standing up to others / finding acceptance for being different.

I second How to be a Woman

If you want something she can dip in and out of - The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse is lovely

Moran has done well from a really, really bad upbringing and is to be commended for that. Not sure that someone who has a book chapter (in a book called 'how to be a woman') titled 'why you should have children' is a total role model so treat with care.

there are other paths.

The chapter 'why you should have children' should probably be read in conjunction with the following chapter 'why you shouldn't have children'.

I doubt very much that anyone is going to read the first chapter, rush off and get pregnant and then read the second chapter and think 'oh shit, maybe I shouldn't have done that'.

Haha! Thanks for all the comments and suggestions. I’ll check out the Maya Angelou and the boy, the fox etc.

Dr Seuss, Oh the places you'll go. Love the quote
You have brains in your head, you have feet in your shoes, you can steer yourself any direction you choose
