Pregnant and overwhelmed with all the skincare products to avoid/use

Hello Everyone,

I just found out I am pregnant, and I am totally overwhelmed with all the information out there. I don't know which skincare products, shampoo products and toothpaste to avoid or use so it doesn't harm the baby.

I have googled so much - but there is no easy list of UK products. I would be really grateful if you could recommend some of the products you used while pregnant and was safe to use.

You could drive yourself insane with what's right and wrong I have never looked into skin care etc whilst pregnant and all my children are fine I'm sure you wouldn't put anything to toxic on your own skin dont worry yourself over it worrying will cause the harm x

Use sunscreen.

Avoid retinol.

That's about it, afaik.

Thank you - I should probably stop worrying! xox

The only thing I stopped was using products with retinol in. Most of my other products are natural anyway. But there's nothing in shampoo/toothpaste that would harm baby!

Definitely SPF as your skin is more sun sensitive when pregnant.
No retinol.
Use olive oil for body and face, can't go wrong with that! Buy a really good little bottle from Tesco's etc. Just use a few drops.

Thank you to everyone! It has put my mind at ease!

33 weeks pregnant and must admit I never even thought of this. (Stressed about plenty of other things mind you). I’ve dyed my hair, had gel nails and then acetone remover (not since lockdown mind) and used the same products as always for everything else - albeit I don’t use anything with retinol anyway. I have used spf 50 on my face when it’s been even vaguely sunny but not days like today where it’s thick cloud and pissing down here.

Download the Think Dirty app and you can check the level of toxic ingredients in products. It's Canadian so not every brand you may use will be on there but it covers a lot.

Howzaboutye · 11/06/2020 17:27

Tbh I would wear SPF 50 every day, as it is uvA and uvB that cause sun spots. A cloudy day can have a surprising amount of UV still.

mencken · 11/06/2020 18:17

it is under two weeks to peak northern hemisphere UV so everyone should have real sunscreen on. (Not anything aimed at women and sold in a tiny pot, real sunscreen)

otherwise UK and EU laws are quite good on not allowing toxic products to be sold in shops. Be careful online.

TerrorWig · 11/06/2020 18:32

Don’t download Think Dirty. It will encourage you to obsess over ‘dirty’ ingredients - which include any sort of SLS or detergents which aren’t dangerous.

Congratulations 🥳
