My best friend has died, can you help me finish her project? Need Anchor Embroidery Thread Scarlet 46 :-(

So my beautiful best friend of 38 years has died of cancer. We're all devastated. Her poor family. Can't meet to console each other obviously.

She was super talented in so many ways & I've just been given one of her early sewing projects. A Traditional Blackwork embroidery piece on linen, started back in the 1990's when she first got cancer at age 19. I know she was struggling to find an identical thread to finish it off, as Anchor changed all their colours (?) We hunted in charity shops & bought job lots of threads but never found one even close, not even in cotton.

I would love to finish the bits left & return it to her Mum. I have been searching on E-Bay again & emailed both Anchor & Coats Crafts who produced the leaflet.

Every single Anchor 'scarlet 46' currently online is bright red, which is nowhere near the shade I need.

Can anyone help?

Oh my, I am so touched with all your responses and ideas. I've laughed, cried and smiled at every one. I feel so sad without her and it's been really nice to talk about her here, thank you.

She always hated a fuss and could quietly turn her hand to amazing crafts without too much bother. She'd be rather bemused to see me emailing around over a thread colour. Grin

Thank you to @JoJothesquirrel @Muppetry76 @NoWordForFluffy @BlackberryViolet @Sewrainbow @Foxyloxy1plus1 for hunting in stashes and sharing number shades.

Thank you to @UselessTrees Star plus @sleepyhead @Pralinelatte @stayathomegardener @SoupDragon @Sewrainbow for the gold leaf finish votes. Would never have thought of that.

I have a lovely email today back from a long-term experienced crafter in the trade, who said the Anchor shades haven't really varied in colour much. Which got me thinking. My friend wasn't really much of a red fan. The embroidery instructions say scarlet 46, but she loved darker Autumnal shades and I think she just picked out a favourite instead! So no wonder I'm confused. Confused

I've gone back through all the threads and picked out one without a numbered wrap on it, just a sticker. Who knows whether this is actually 72, but it looks pretty close?

I'll see whether this looks 'right' and hopefully there'll be enough to finish it. She was a traditionalist and I'm not sure what she'd think to gold threads on this! I'll see how it feels as I approach the last leaf Smile

And yes, @LyingWitchInTheWardrobe, I like the thought of her looking down and picking over the skeins here.

I'll be back to talk about experienced Facebook Groups @SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius if it doesn't work out. I'm rather new to sewing myself and it's quite daunting to attempt to finish her careful work.

Thanks everyone, you've given me a new energy to get to it.

Ooh @Kermitsbiggestfan, I love the neatness of that organisation! Smile You're so kind. I 'think' I have the one that might fit, but I'll come back if it doesn't, thank you.

The beauty of MN in one thread! Excuse the pun.

I'm so sorry for your loss OP. I'm sure your friend will just be pleased you've taken the effort to finish her beautiful work, regardless of if it is gold or a perfectly matching thread. And please don't worry about not being as good as her, a mistake adds another level of love and depth to the story behind the finished piece of work.

This could be really therapeutic in your grieving, each stitch leading to another fond memory, a tear in your eye as you come to terms with your loss.

I have a few unfinished projects and would consider it to be a high accolade if a friend wanted to finish one of them in my memory. I hope your friend rests in peace.

Hi I tried to respond earlier but the app on my phone wouldn't post. I have 3 very similar ones you can have. They are slightly brighter red than in the photo.
But I also think gold or silver to fill in would be lovely.
So sorry for your loss X

Kintsugi

It's a wonderful idea

Jellycatspyjamas · 11/06/2020 23:17

It doesn’t look like scarlet unless it’s faded over time, DMC 902 looks like it might be a good match. What a lovely way of honouring your friend, I’m sorry for your loss.

I’ll search my box when I am home

Mybeautifulfriend · 08/08/2020 19:38

Thanks everyone Smile. Took me longer than I thought & made some errors, but it was time for it to return to her family. I've watched it being carted about for many years, so feeling quite peaceful it's finished.
