Hi Everyone!

I have a second interview for a job coming up. The job will require me to relocate. They know this.
What sort of help can I ask about relocating without taking the piss/being cheeky?

Obviously relocating will be costly for us. We already know they area we would need to move to as DH will still continue to work in London.

Thanks in advance

It totally depends on the individual situation, and how uniquely placed you are to fulfill the role, and how normal it is for the company to need to pay relocation expenses. In some industries there are a limited number of experienced specialists in a function and relocation every 2-3 years is totally normal. Those companies will have a set policy - one month's gross salary towards relocation expenses is fairly normal. For most families their actual expenses would significantly exceed a maximum like this, and it would only be worth relocating if the ongoing financials would make it a sensible decision in the long run.

But if it is hard to find someone with your level of skills and experience, and they have not been able to find anyone who is already living locally who could do the job, then you might well be able to push for more, especially if this is a rare situation for them so they don't fear they will be setting themselves up for difficulties next time they are recruiting if they are generous this time.

They may have a policy not to pay relocation if your current address is within a 2 or 3 hour commute of the new job location (the exact limit will vary by company but may will be a limit that is significantly greater than you are willing to commute) - this may be relevant to you if you are considering that your DH is going to be commuting back to your current location.

It is normal to add a rider into your contract that if relocation expenses are paid, you agree to repay the company that amount if you then don't stay with them for at least 3 years.

It is some years ago now, but the last time we relocated for dh's job, we had to move to within 30 miles of the new workplace to qualify for our relocation expenses to be paid. It might be worth seeing if there is any limitation such as this.
