If we're replacing all the statues of all the historical figures that are currently up in the UK, who should take their place? I can't think of anyone!

OP posts:
Tillygetsit · 10/06/2020 04:00

Kathy Burke Grin

Desertserges · 10/06/2020 04:21

Mary Wollstonecraft, Ada Lovelace, Aphra Behn, Ethel Smyth, Gwen John, Fanny Burney, George Eliot.

Though Kathy Burke would also be cool.

Doreen Lawrence

The women who built Waterloo Bridge in London during the war.

silentpool · 10/06/2020 07:39

George Orwell.

Pelleas · 10/06/2020 07:43

Stephen Hawking

fairislecable · 10/06/2020 07:45

Lady Hale

Moonmelodies · 10/06/2020 07:50

... off to google Fanny Burney ...

YardleyX · 10/06/2020 07:52

Agree. Doreen Lawrence.

Al1Langdownthecleghole · 10/06/2020 07:56

Right now, JK Rowling & Emma Nicholson.

I’d add Marie Curie and Rosalind Franklin to the list too.

dudsville · 10/06/2020 08:14

I think making statues is an out dated notion. I don't want to put anyone on a plinth.

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 10/06/2020 08:18

Rik Mayall, making a disgusted face and flicking a 'V' sign.

broccoliduns · 10/06/2020 08:23

@NewLevelsOfTiredness I would donate to this cause

Mumoblue · 10/06/2020 08:23

I was gonna say Mary Seacole, but I googled it and she does have a statue. That cheered me up a bit.

Vdubcampa · 10/06/2020 08:28

Magdalen Berns. Rik Mayal.

HexagonsHecateAndHecuba · 10/06/2020 08:33

Doris Morris, Kathleen Wrasama, the female SOE Agents, esp Noor Inyat Khan. Rsalined Franklin, Jocelyn Bell Burrell (both deprived of Nobel prizes by men failing to credit their achievements)

But mostly I think statues should represent normal people, those whose struggle is unseen or whose achievements go unsung. I particularly like the three sculptures at Brixton station of people from the local community.

Swiftsseason · 10/06/2020 08:38

Doreen Lawrence.

StylishMummy · 10/06/2020 08:45

There's a statue of George Elliot in Nuneaton town centre.

I'd like to keep the statues that are there already, they're our history

ErrolTheDragon · 10/06/2020 08:46

I'd have Dorothy Hodgkin for my great british scientist pick. (Her portrait by Maggie Hambling is great, btw - a vibrant depiction of a woman passionate about her work, unstoppable by age and disabilities. www.npg.org.uk/collections/search/portrait/mw07497/Dorothy-Hodgkin)

The statue of an actual person I can think of which most 'brings sunshine' is the one of Eric Morecambe ... so, more of people of his ilk who've brought joy to peoples lives might be nice.
So, obviously, Terry Pratchett in his hat.

TheMandalorian · 10/06/2020 08:51

I think you are being a bit facetious with this post actually.
We are not replacing all historical figures and statues. We wouldn't tolerate someone like Hitler on display anywhere other than a museum or wax works which should be the same for a slave trade or oppressor really.
Some historical figures should be moved to a museum with appropriate explanation and updated with a more socially aware local figure.
Or for instance if the founding father of a town is displayed perhaps an additional plaque pointing out his/her historical importance.

bashcrashfall · 10/06/2020 09:24

Margaret Haig Thomas
Margaret Bondfield
Eleanor Rathbone.

Bit of a theme there.
Def not more statues of Emmeline and Cristabel Pankhurst, or Winston Churchill.

My nana. She was the strongest woman I know. Started work in heavy industry at the age of 13 and worked hard her entire life. I couldn’t have lived her life, 2 world wars, the loss of many loved ones.....yet faced it all with courage! One the most wonderful women I’ve ever had the privilege to know.
