Child's hands so sore from school soap

diazapamdependent · 09/06/2020 20:36

My daughters at school and understandably they are washing hands very often. She's got a reaction to the soap and or frequency and tonight her hands are red and burning. Any hand creams make it sting.

Can I get something OTC for her or is it a GP question?

She's allergic more generally, carries epipen for nut allergy.

moisturiser and use a soap substitute such as dermol (from behind the counter in pharmacies but no prescription needed).
Ask school if she can bring her own soap for her hands.

StillGardening · 09/06/2020 20:42

We use Aveeno - the green one, not the blue one ...

Angel2702 · 09/06/2020 20:43

I’ve sent mine in with a small tube of a Reno hand cream as they had the same issue

My dd had same problem at school before lock down I sent her with the green aveeno cream, really helped.

millymollymoomoo · 09/06/2020 20:56

Make sure she’s drying her hands properly too
My kids end up like this when they do t dry them - that’s what then makes from sore

ChateauMargaux · 09/06/2020 20:59

Rosehip oil if she can tolerate the sensation on her hands. Weleda green cream (has another name but it's in a green tube) and then feed her skin from the inside.. coconut oil, chicken stock, avocados, carrot juice and reduce inflammation (look at anti inflammatory dietary suggestions)

Plus... send her with a soap she can tolerate, something made from olive oil might work.

OhioOhioOhio · 09/06/2020 21:00

I'm a teacher and my hands are always cracked and stinging due to school soap.

MyKingdomforaNameChange · 09/06/2020 21:03

Olive Oil soap is great, so softening. I won't use anything else since I started stocking it in my shop. I use the Aloe Vera for my hands, and the Shea Butter in the shower and for my face. I don't need to moisturise after a shower any more, although of course I still do my face!

It really is lovely :)

Movinghouse1 · 09/06/2020 21:05

Make sure she is thoroughly washing off ALL the soap each time.

I've found the body shop hemp cream great, but maybe finding a moisturising hand wash she can take for her personal use might help?

RandomMess · 09/06/2020 21:06

I was going to say body shop hemp cream as well.

StoneSourFan · 09/06/2020 21:08

Ensure she's drying her hands properly and rinse all the soap off as they are the main culprits for sore hands. Send her in with some hand cream, aloe Vera is always good d

Lordfrontpaw · 09/06/2020 21:09

My hands were like that when work got some god awful antibacterial soap before lockdown. I bought some little boxes of soap that looks like little pieces of paper and used that and Aveena moisturiser.

Badassmama · 09/06/2020 21:09

It’s a touch of dermatitis, get her a really good handcream.

Badassmama · 09/06/2020 21:10

Posted too early- Lush do one called ‘Helping hands’ that is super gentle, natural and puts a barrier on the skin to help protect. It was developed for nurses and people that wash their hands a lot.

WreckTangled · 09/06/2020 21:13

My dds have been awful too. Have tried all the creams mentioned above but the only thing that's helped is the dermol hand wash. She's taken one into school and has one at home too. They were so sore they were almost bleeding but they're much better now.

DominaShantotto · 09/06/2020 21:13

I sent mine in with a tube of aveeno when they went back to school the other week - so far it's kept things at bay, but I also have a prescription tub of the emollient that can also be used as a soap that I can send in if required (it's been stored in a ziplock bag in the boot of my car unopened to keep a jittery school calm).

chocolatespiders · 09/06/2020 21:18

NHS frontline here and my hands are raw. I am putting sudocream on at night which helps .
Also aveeno hand skin relief (blue), E45 daily hand cream and centraban hand cream have all helped .
SLS free soap is meant to help but I struggle to find any.

diazapamdependent · 09/06/2020 21:21

I was suspecting sheneeds to do more rinsing and to pay her hands dry rather than rubbing them.

It's occurred in a previous winter too and also before lockdown.

Thanks for the suggestions I will got to pharmacy tomorrow and see what I can get for her (and what the school will allow her to take in)

She's been crying it's so sore so hope I can help it out.

I'm a teacher. I suffer with dry skin anyway but my hands are so much worse since the constant hand-washing at school. To be honest your dd's hands don't look that bad to me.

I've been trying to moisture my hands regularly during the day and have told the children in my class that they're welcome to bring their own moisturiser or hand cream and use it whenever they want.

LovingLen · 09/06/2020 21:23

It’s very expensive but Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream put on overnight with cotton gloves, it’s very greasy and has a slightly ointmenty smell but always clears up my hands when they get bad.

WreckTangled · 09/06/2020 21:27

With the dermol wash you can also use it after you washed and dried your hands to moisturise them. It's pharmacy only so you usually have to ask for it. Dds school have been pretty strict about things but have been happy for her to bring it in as it's left at school.

RandomMess · 09/06/2020 21:31

Yes the Dermol wash cream the DDs has this for psoriasis- brilliant idea!

makingmiracles · 09/06/2020 21:35

Second the suggestions of body shop hemp cream but the best one we have found-dp is ocd on cleanliness so this has been hell for his already over washed hands, is Okeefes working hands, lots of places sell it incl places like screwfix, it’s around £6/7 for small tub and £12 for the larger tub but it works really well and seems to work much quicker than sudocrem and hemp both of which he sometimes uses.

AnnaMagnani · 09/06/2020 21:39

GP thing. She needs her own handwash instead of the school soap such as Dermol. You can buy it but it is £££.

She also needs to moisturise after every handwash - doesn't need to be fancy, a big tub of Cetraben or similar will do.

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 09/06/2020 21:40

Another vote for Aveeno.

I’m NHS and have always had to wash my hands 50 plus times a day, even pre Covid. Red raw hands to the wrists every winter.

I’ve tried most things and Aveeno is my fave.
