What's the cheapest way to have a short term car?

I'm currently pregnant and the only car we have is DP's very small three door Golf.

We're planning on moving back to my home country when the baby is around 6 months old, so would need a new car for approximately 6 months until we move.

I can't figure out the best-value way to do it with the least hassle:

Buying a second hand car then reselling?
Short lease?
Long rent?

I want something that isn't very expensive as we're saving for the move, but also something that is safe and not have to worry about it breaking down as I'll be driving the baby around.

Any advice welcome please!

ebay throwaway with a year's MoT. Bit tricky at the moment with The Bug but you can get a decent 9-10 year old Ford for well under £2k. Make sure it has a V5 though, the DVLA are in chaos and are doing very little work and certainly none that involves paper.

safety is 99.9% up to the driver.

You can swap with DP if you feel he has the safer car.

I'm confused.

A golf isn't a small car.

I also managed perfectly fine with a 3 door car when DS was a baby.

In fact I found it easier than with DH's 5 door as when you push the front seat forward to access the back you have more space and are manoeuvring the baby seat forward and out rather than sideways.

TBH I'd recommend you try fitting a baby seat in the golf (a lot of shops have demo models that allow you to do this) and see how you get on.

Unless you're planning on buying a ridiculously sized buggy a golf is fine for a baby (friend had a 3 door mini and managed fine).
