Any one else’s child suddenly start calling you Mama?

4yo DD has started to call me Mama over the last few weeks. I’ve never referred to myself as Mama and none of our friends or family use it. The only time she has heard some one use it is when we visited my friend who loves very far away and her daughter uses it. But that was a year and a half ago.

I don’t particularly like being called Mama. But if that’s what DD wants to call me Then it’s fine. I’d never correct her or tell her not to. Just a bit intrigued as to why she would suddenly start and if it’s a sign she’s feeling a bit insecure?

Mine did around that age. I get a combination now; mama, mummy and mammy. To be fair, DD also goes by several names (real, nickname, short form, unicorn, leopard, mermaid, droid, whatever latest fad is etc) and I have to figure out which name she answers to depending on the noise she makes Confused

Haha mine is that same @SkyPieRat. It’s mainly different animals but they all sound the same so I always get it wrong! Maybe she’s just experimenting. I’m a bit shamed to admit it does irrationally irritate me. No idea why. Though like I said I’d never tell her and just let her get on with it.

Yes my 4 year started a while ago. It doesn't bother me exactly but it is part of a whole phase he is going through of being babyish, talking in a baby voice and not in proper sentences and acting helpless when dressing etc. I just keep telling him to talk properly but I don't make a thing out of mama particularly.

The title sounds like someone else's child is calling you Mama! That would be even more confusing...

Mine both went through this at around that age. I can't remember when they stopped doing it, but they did eventually. My ex MIL was horrified. Apparently it was the result of living alongside so many immigrants in our area Hmm Angry

My kids call me mama, always have, no idea why. They decided at some point (10ish) to call their father papa. As adults they still do. Go figure. My dp calls his mother mummy!

Monsterjam · 09/06/2020 16:19

For some reason mine have always called me mama no idea why x

bookmum08 · 09/06/2020 16:19

My daughter calls me Mama quite a lot. As well as Mum, Mummy or Muuuuuuuuuuuum.
She is 12.
She went through a phase around the age of 4 or 5 calling me Mother because we were reading My Naughty Little Sister.
I like Mama.

Mine all call me ‘mumma’, I’m not sure why! It’s not something I’ve ever encouraged. They’re 6, 4 and 1. I quite like it though!

TheMandalorian · 09/06/2020 16:22

Yeh. Mine have started mixing in mama, mumma with mummy. I quite like it. Occasionally I'll get my real name used with a cheeky grin.

My 18 month old has called me 'mama' since he could say it, DH keeps calling him the little French boy. It's quite cute hearing him shout it from his cot in the morning 😍
