What support is the gov proposing for working parents?

Schools now not open until sept at least..

What are working parents supposed to do? On another thread one company director said they were expecting resignations from parents who couldn't continue to work from home and look after children. Another said they were requiring all staff in and expected childcare related resignations but this would save redundancy costs

I've sent this question to the pm news conference

Many working parents are not furloughed and are working from home and looking after young children, This is unsustainable long term and many will need to resign if this continues. What support or employment protection do you propose?

Very convenient that it will avoid the need for redundancy pay.

I physically can't do my job from home, so I can't work if school isn't open. I'm on furlough right now so not an issue but it will be come September/October if schools still aren't back full time. I'm also a single parent so it's not even a case of having a partner to try and work my hours around.

There should be some form of Universal Basic Income for those who are going to be affected - or I could work 2 days a week for example if DS is in school 2 days a week and then have the rest of my wages topped up.

Can't see it happening though, I'll probably just be expected to survive on benefits.

I can't work from home and daughter isn't in school. The latest I read on is that schools will be able to decide if and how they open to more pupils safely. Potentially there is a way of increasing the key workers groups so that those who have to return to working outside the home can access school provisions ?
Alternatively the government will need to look at family bubbles so we can use other family members for childcare ?

The PM said employers would have to be reasonable but I can't see how asking firms to continue without their staff indefinitely is reasonable. So, yes the government need to tell business what is reasonable and support them to do it.

I'm in the strange situation (school, so all a bit different) where I have staff telling me why I can manage without them in post for the time being. Surely an odd place to be when employees are arguing that they are not necessary to the employers.

It's all well and good him saying employers need to be reasonable but some jobs cannot be done from home and people need to work to pay bills. Even people who can work from home are going to be less productive with the kids around.

Childminders can work from 1st June...I’m on furlough at moment and unable to work from home (receptionist) so if I’m asked to go back to work then I will have to send mine to a childminder.

LaceCurtains I've been trying to work doubly hard from home even with my kids here as I'm worried I'll appear to be dispensable. I think a lot of companies who have furloughed a certain % of staff are finding they are not seeing their productivity drop by that same % but rather less. If there are redundancies I do worry the furloughed will be first to go.

I don't understand teaching unions on this at all - I would have been insisting that lockdown proves teachers are essential, schools are so essential they need to be opened ASAP, teachers should be paid more, more should be hired etc like money was thrown at the NHS. Feels like an opportunity missed.
