Can I ask you to smell the bottom of your electric toothbrush?

Because mine smells like a sewer. I became aware of an eggy fart smell in the bathroom every time I brushed my teeth. I’ve narrowed it down to the bottom of the electric toothbrush, when I take it off the charger. The smell is collecting in the hole at the bottom. I’ve spent the last 15 minutes cleaning it out with cotton buds and Flash. Is this a normal part of everyone’s bathroom cleaning routine? Please tell me it’s not just me

They get absolutely rancidly disgusting. It's one of the reasons I won't use one.
It's the stale water and toothpaste that drips down from the brush and collects at the bottom Envy

I clean the bottom of our electric toothbrushes with a spray of bleach & clean with a small kids brush every week. I’ve done this for years, never had a smell.

Nomorewineever · 07/06/2020 22:37

I take the head off and leave it overnight in a shallow cap of listerine once a week. Then I wipe the handle and base very thoroughly. Otherwise they do indeed stink and get all gungy.

If water collects in the toothbrush/paste tumbler thing it smells vile like that.

BettyCarver · 07/06/2020 22:57

Phew, glad it’s not just me. Listerine - good idea 👍🏻

I was ours in disinfectant every week.

middleager · 07/06/2020 23:13

It must have felt quite satisfying cleaning it out with a cotton bud, but I'm a bit gross like that.

I hate the build up of toothpaste inside the tooth brush holder. We have hard water here and within 1-2 days when you wash it out, there's a build up.

TheChosenTwo · 07/06/2020 23:16

It’s just manky toothpastey water but yes, smells absolutely revolting!
I clean ours and the tumbler that ds’s toothbrush lives in every week.

PawPawNoodle · 07/06/2020 23:17

I clean mine directly after I use it (rinsing, nothinh heavy duty) and let it air laying down. My hole (🤭) smells like nothing.

RedSoloCup · 07/06/2020 23:24

After my nightly use of electric toothbrush I remove the head and wash it then let it dry brush downwards on a bit of loo roll. The other part is rinsed and left to dry too but I never put it into the socket bit unless I am about to use it. No smells so far but I do remember that horrible toothbrush glass gunge at the bottom and how disgusting it was before I went electric.

SkyPieRat · 08/06/2020 05:30

Never had that! But then I dry it before I put it back on the stand.

ChessieFL · 08/06/2020 05:58

I dry mine off every time after I use it so it doesn’t get gunky.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 08/06/2020 07:24

Yep , i too am a drier so never had this problem.

Tsubasa1 · 08/06/2020 08:37

I just rinse mine after using it with water, and it doesn't stink. Its called hygene!

TheOriginalNutty · 08/06/2020 08:38

Just checked mine and it's clean and non stinky

PigletJohn · 08/06/2020 08:39

You can wash off the saliva and tooth grime after use. If neglected it accumulates into a scaly deposit.

We use Braun/Oral B and you can run them under the hot tap or leave in the basin. I suppose the designers are aware they will be used in wet environments.

If they have been put in the charger dirty, you can sponge it with WUL. Unplug it first.

SisyphusAndTheRockOfUntidiness · 08/06/2020 08:42

Mine doesn't smell. DH & DD's smell vile & get gummed up very quickly unless I sort them out, I think it's just about getting into the habit of washing & drying it properly, & not letting the toothpaste stuff run down the handle.
