What have you bought your DC expecting they’d love it but they weren’t bothered?

For us it’s been;

  • V-Tech toot toot set for DS as a toddler. Bought for him for Christmas, never touched.
  • the Ikea play kitchen and lots of food etc. Rarely even looked at. (Thankfully bought second hand and sold on, to moans of ‘but I loved that kitchen!’)
  • DS had a mini micro scooter that he adored in the shops and then ignored for well over a year when he was given one - he finally started using it and we realised it was too small
  • DD LOVED Peppa last year. Watched it loads, she had Peppa wellies, a Peppa hat....we got her some a Peppa beanie toys for Christmas and she’s barely touched them.

What have your kids ignores that you thought they’d love?

An Xbox 😒

1point21gigawatts · 07/06/2020 20:20

Trampoline. We've had it 4 year nearly. They've hardly used the bloody thing.

Florencenotflo · 07/06/2020 20:23

Barbie camper van. Dd is only 4, in hindsight she was probably too young for it when it was bought for her, she wasn't quite 4. But it was a surprise addition to her Christmas list last year, typically once I'd already bought and wrapped her presents! Thankfully my in-laws bought it and kept what they had already bought for her birthday!

It took DH so long to put together and stick all the stickers on, it's barely been used. I'm hoping it will as she gets older!

Most things. I’m trying to think what didn’t end up being five minute wonders

  1. magnetic stuff. They come back to things like that time and again
  2. building blocks, Lego etc
  3. cars and vehicles
  4. imaginext stuff gets well played with
  5. Brio, toot toot, marble run gets dragged out periodically.

My older ds6 isnt really into toys, used to buy him presents for his birthday and Christmas that he would barely use.

More recently, I bought a outdoor swing for dbaby. I was so excited when it arrived, made it all up, put him in it and he showed no emotion of any sort - no happiness, no sadness, no excitement. The second time I put him in it, he started sucking his thumb to go to sleep.

Equimum · 07/06/2020 20:31

DS(4) lives Playmobila bad was desperate for a Playmobil house for Christmas. We paid an arm and leg for one and he has barely touched it 😡.

Similarly, grandparents were really excited to buy a Scalectrix track for his older brother. Also very unpopular!

The Fortnite Battle Bus with extra figures exclusive to Smyths for £49.99. They played with it for an hour then went back to playing on their switches/tablets/PS4.

shellysheridan · 07/06/2020 20:33

Invested in lots of happyland. Never touched by either ds. They prefer playmobil
Toot toot vtech stuff. Got about four sets. Also never touched. They love their brio train set and it gets played with daily

Flynn999 · 07/06/2020 20:40

Jumperoo when he was a baby used for about 5 minutes then ignored it for the next 6 months.

Play kitchen from ikea. He loved then when we went to playgroups etc. He slammed the door a few times on it then didn’t touch it. we just used it to store stuff on for a year. We then sold it on, but annoyingly he would probably enjoy playing with it now 🤦‍♀️.

Aside from that I think we’ve done quite well getting value out of stuff, Some stuff has sat for a few months but he rotates back round to stuff every so often.

CatsOfSummer · 07/06/2020 20:57

@shellysheridan my DS loves his Brio too, that was all he bothered with for a long time!

@Flynn999 I know what you mean - our Ikea kitchen was next to where we used to fold washing and it all ended up on there. We have quite a small house so it was really taking up valuable space - hopefully its newest owner likes it more than my two!

Dolls house

SkinSkin · 07/06/2020 21:03

Nintendo switch.

That was after months of canvassing for it!

It got looked at and then politely put down and they went back to Roblox 🙈

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 07/06/2020 21:07

Mine don't like lego. Thankfully I've 'only' ever bought 2 sets.

An Our Generation Doll. Untouched, to the point that I actually gave it away and she didn't notice

TerrorWig · 07/06/2020 22:21

I remember going to great lengths to buy an Early Learning Centre kitchen for my twins when they were about 2. Lots of that lovely wooden food to go with it, and some of the Ikea small kitchen stuff.

Swear to god I played with it more than they did. They could not have been less interested.

DS3 was also not interested, but by the time we'd had it about 5 years it had been used as a climbing frame and was falling apart Hmm

H1978 · 07/06/2020 22:43

I recently spent more than I wanted on a scented slime station for dd3,who loves slime, after playing with it once, it’s sitting in the basement toy room gathering dust 🙄

Also a range of outside toys the dcs asked for now in the back of the shed and no one even remembers what we got

Houseplantmad · 07/06/2020 23:11

Lovely wooden dolls house for DD. She hardly ever played with it. I loved it though!

Rebelwithallthecause · 07/06/2020 23:14

Jumperoo when little
Scooter and balance bike now a toddler

TheChosenTwo · 07/06/2020 23:14

Bought ds some kind of Ben 10 character mix and match contraption for Christmas, he had talked about it for months but I had resisted getting it from his list because I thought it would be a waste of money.
It was.

SharpieInThe · 07/06/2020 23:20

Push toy to encourage walking.
Dolls house.

They loved the cosy coupe, slide, lego and indoor tent.

Best thing ever is a huge pack of plain printer paper from Tesco. Causes so much excitement.

TeamLannister · 07/06/2020 23:21

Nintendo DS...DD obsessed with it for months but immediately lost interest. Also a fancy wooden playhouse that she never played in. In fairness she didn't ask for it, but she loved her cousins crappy plastic one so I thought she'd be beside herself. Oh no, didn't give a shite about it. And she actively disliked baby Annabell, thinks she's a massive creep.

35andThriving · 09/06/2020 17:55

Wooden fire station

LuvMyBoyz · 09/06/2020 17:59

Everything! He’s 24 now and has been getting cash for every pressie since he was 9. I just couldn’t take the rejections anymore.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 09/06/2020 18:01

Hot wheels tracks.

flamegame · 09/06/2020 18:01

Harry Potter Lego - bloody expensive, you make it, and it sits there gathering dust forever more. Free play Lego much more useful.

And bloody hatchimals. 5 minute wonder

UnderTheBus · 09/06/2020 18:04

My daughter likes pretty much everything, but she wasnt impressed by the toot toot garage which we bought for her first birthday and sold before her second birthday.
Also megablocks, she isnt that interested in construction. And a brio train set which we luckily got for 70% off in the tkmaxx winter sales, and sold for more than we paid for it!

We are lucky to have a great toy library in our town which gives you a chance to try out toys to see what they actually like before paying an arm and a leg for it.
