Anybody know why printer cartridges are hard to find

Actually I am only talking about the ones I want but they have been unavailable on Amazon for weeks.

They usually cost about £55 for a multipack which is a bloody rip off in my opinion but now they are 'only available for these sellers' and the prices start at over £90.

I check every day but Amazon themselves never seem to have any stock.

Disruption of the supply chain because of the pandemic.

@CarlaH - You don't need HP inks - I have always used compatible inks
This lot cost £24.99.
Your choice.

Before I signed up to HP instant ink I would use compatible inks from the different supermarkets and online stores. I always had problems with them. Either the cartridges weren’t recognised so the printer refused to use them, or when it did print I’d get really strange blank bits, as though the printer decided to miss out a few lines of text here and there. I’m convinced it was programmed to do that on purpose to frustrate the customer as I haven’t had any print quality issues at all with instant ink.

We have a very common home printer and ink has been like hens teeth to find, even online. We do need to use it for work, so have bought an industrial 'office' on - ink no bother.

Still more expensive than HP instant ink. Waaaay more expensive

DanFmDorking · 08/06/2020 16:55

@biglittlemedium - I too have had problems with compatible inks from Supermarkets.
I've had no problems with this lot.

DanFmDorking · 08/06/2020 16:56

@2007Millie - What are the prices then? Where's the link?

2007Millie · 08/06/2020 17:59

@DanFmDorking

Well it's only £18 for 1,000 full colour pages

DanFmDorking · 08/06/2020 18:52

@2007Millie - (sigh)
"The compatible HP 932/933 XL ink cartridge complete pack offers great value and prints a combined total approx 5,200 pages at 5% average coverage and contains 72ml of high quality ink compared to 48ml in the original cartridge."

2007Millie · 08/06/2020 18:57

@DanFmDorking

Great, you win, are you happy now? Because you seem like the sort of person who thrives on things like this. Weirdo.

stickerqueen · 08/06/2020 19:03

@biglittlemedium same here.

DanFmDorking · 08/06/2020 19:27

@2007Millie - dear oh dear - do calm down!
Merely trying to help posters about printer inks.

Depends, some knockoffs dont work as well. Old housemate thought it be a smart buy, wrong....
In fine print it can also void any warranty for the acual printer, least here in Aus, id assume UK similar.
Which is fine for a cheap printer but not if you dropped some decent cash on it

Mohiqo · 09/06/2020 07:39

I’ve found that the stated yield of ink cartridges is nowhere near what it says on the back of the pack. HP instant ink has been marvellous.

DonLewis · 09/06/2020 07:44

@Bananas17 that's the ink I need. Bloody pain in the arse! Thanks for posting though, at least I know!

missmouse101 · 09/06/2020 07:51

A few on ebay a bit cheaper.

winniesanderson · 09/06/2020 07:58

Ebay is normally a good shout for things like this. I would be careful using unbranded though, that's what I bought a few weeks back and very quickly had a broken printer. Like a pp, I found it cheaper to get a new printer than ink cartridges and managed to get a HP from Argos with 4 months free ink for £40.

ScrapThatThen · 09/06/2020 08:20

I've also had issues with HP printers not accepting non branded inks. And using HP inks happily now. I realise this makes HP absolute monopolising b*stards. Although now I am interested in a laser printer (thanks again Mumsnet) because the HP printer is less than a year old and being annoying.

Longdistance · 09/06/2020 08:29

This gets on my nerves. As I by the XL ink cartridges, these are full with ink, so what is in the ‘normal’ ones? A complete con, and yes, I know you can buy a new printer and they give you a dribble of ink in those cartridges.
This is the biggest rip off of the century. I can’t imagine it costs much to produce that plastic tat with ink. Where did all the ink cartridge refill shops go? They used to be a thing. My dbs bf family had one of those franchises.
I think I’ll get a laser one next time, though by the time I’ve spent all my money on ink, I couldn’t bought one 🤔

Longdistance · 09/06/2020 08:30

Could’ve bought one, not couldn’t.

subcentro · 09/06/2020 09:03

HP Instant Ink all the way. They arrive in the post just as I need them.

FeelinFagin · 09/06/2020 09:07

I've never found compatible inks to damage my printer. I suppose it depends who the manufacturer is though, the super cheap use water based inks which as lesser quality (but still get the job done however).
I have had issues with them not being accepted by the printer but that's what a chip resetter is for. One press and the printer doesn't care. As for not lasting as long as branded inks, that's not something I've noticed. The ml of ink being the same in the cartridges (check the small print). I found that printers will often also read ink levels to be zero when there's still loads of ink left. Again, even with branded inks, resetting the chip will give you pages upon pages more of printing from the so-called empty ink, branded original or not.

I'm using compatible inks in my HP printer now (I waited til it was out of Warranty just to be safe) and I've not noticed any problems. It displays the "Oy! This isn't a real cartridge!" Message but then just gets on with it.
