If you know anything of the history of Bristol and the slave trade - his name and legacy is deeply controversial. There are two sides to it at least.

I don't know who was responsible for it being torn down. But it is a big development for this city and its long history of protests.

Hope everyone crying about this slave trade bloke’s statue is also campaigning to restore the various other statues and monuments to another white bloke who was pretty fucking awful but did a lot for charity, Jimmy Savile.

Personally I think it’s excellent (and should have been removed by the council a long time ago).

You have to start somewhere

We do. It seems odd to be so concerned about people who have been dead for 300 years and then support industries that enslave people right now but there you go.

Just in case you needed reminding, the protests are about systemic racism here and now, there you go.

No sweatshop clothes then?

@alsohuman

Slavery then and slavery now.

Both bad.

Not mutually exclusive.

Both should be protested against.

But some people will feel more strongly about one than another.

And that's okay.

Getting rid of that statue and pushing it into the water is also a historical event.

June 2020, the time people got rid of the statue in Bristol of a slave trading racist.

Surely a great moment in history?
