Hi,

My little boy is 13 and is due to have his operation next week, does anyone have any experience of what he should expect afterwards? In terms of recovery and pain management/wound care?

Your poor boy, no advice but didn’t want to read and run. I hope he recovers quickly x

Salt in the bath (not so much it burns tho) and as few clothes as possible (make a tent under his duvet?) My ds1 was very sore for about a week but it soon healed..it was sensitive for ages tho!

If however you mean to write 13m... leave his nappy off as much as possible!!!

Hiya, my little boy had his last year, he was 8. In terms of recovery it was much better than we expected. We gave him calpol and ibruprofen the day after but he didn’t really need it and then nothing after that. The stitches were a little itchy but nothing terrible, and he was really good about leaving it alone. Baggy pants and trousers were a must. It does look so different tho, that was quite a surprise for me, but he wasn’t fussed at all! Good luck :)

For my DS they showed me how to put on the dressing (fresh from the packet, folded spontex cloth / multipurpose kitchen cloth for each change) and cover it with a thick layer of Vaseline so it didn’t stick. Then just a pair of pants (not boxers) over the dressing to hold it in place.

It was very hard for him to walk and he had 10 days away from school.

Salt baths every night.

He played a lot of video and board games and read books so he didn’t have to move too much. Also he took children’s ibuprofen for pain relief.

It healed well and he’s had a great long term outcome.

Loose clothes, OTC pain killers and a bit of easy time. My DP had his done in his early 20s and found that the idea of it was far scarier than the recovery itself!

Thanks for the advice! With everything going on we haven’t had the appointments we were meant to have to discuss the aftercare and everything - but it doesn’t seem too bad.
