Anything else I can try? Period pain

IrishCream123 · 06/06/2020 16:11

I feel like I’m in labour (definitely not). 1st day of my period and I’m in so much pain. I’ve taken paracetamol, Buscopan I can’t take ibuprofen because I take Etodolac for Arthritis. I’m 43 and I’m pretty sure I’m Perimenopausal. (24-25 day cycle) what else can I try other the eating my own body weigh in chocolate? 😂

The Mirena was pretty much a dream for me for 5 years. Then the gynaecologist put me on Desorex, progesterone only pill, it’s been bliss, no more periods, zero pain.

Minced raw ginger, helped teasp in hot water drink, it all, helps hugely.
Repeat as needed

I'm 46 and 90 minutes ago felt like I was in labour! Due on tomorrow and overcome with crippling pain I had to curl up on the floor. Took two tablets and husband made a hot water bottle. As quick as it came on, it went (well after 30 minutes). I feel your pain as last month it woke me up during the night and I couldn't sleep because of it

Painkillers, hot water bottle and lying on my front on the bed and trying to sleep for a bit. It usually passes the worst of it that way.

I know you said codeine makes you spacey but have you tried cocodamol? In very bad months I take cocodamol and ibuprofen and then lie down as I said above.

Fandoozle1 · 06/06/2020 20:33

I know this wont help today but do you have a walk-in centre near you? You could try to get seen there tomorrow by a doctor, I always find they are very helpful for most conditions. However I would call first as they may be operating differently due to the coronavirus.

AllTheUsernamesAreAlreadyTaken · 06/06/2020 20:36

The only thing that ever worked for mine were Colpermin which you can buy in the chemist.
Sometimes the pain of the contractions (cramps) would make me vomit. Thankfully, don't seem to have them since having children.

Thehogfatherstolemycurry · 06/06/2020 20:39

Do you use tampons? I'm 48 now but started with the same problem at your age. I found stopping using tampons made a massive difference, more than I would ever have imagined. I use a mooncup now and the pains, cramps ect are 90% better plus no clotting.

HelloJohnGotANewMotor · 06/06/2020 20:44

I used to get mefanamic acid on prescription but tbh it wasn't that helpful. I've spent as much time as possible on the pill. On minipill now aged 52 solely in order to avoid periods.
Doctor making noises about taking me off due to my age but I'm resistant- want to stay on it until menopause, otherwise my life is ruined by monthly pains on a par with labour and weeks of anxiety, anticipating the pain and being unable to make firm plans for anything incase my period comes and I'm left rolling round on the floor in agony at work/ the shops/ on the train etc etc etc.

ScarfLadysBag · 06/06/2020 20:45

Co-codamol and ibuprofen cocktail and an orgasm for me! I used to get awful cramps pre-baby so I sympathise.

flabbyflabbyflabguts · 06/06/2020 22:01

Hot water bottle always works for me

mortforya · 07/06/2020 06:05

Why on earth are women suffering each month. Paracetamol?? Absolutely, fine for mild pain, what you are describing is not mild pain. My gp has put my dd on ponstan as she has ended up in a&e multiple occasions with period pain. Also, I have to take any take anything with codeine in it, so solpadeine or neurofen plus, femina, used to have codeine in it but of course its being removed. If it was a male drug, you can be sure it would have been doubled instead of removed. Seriously, ladies look after yourselves with diet and exercise but please seek proper pain relief when you need it.

sashh · 07/06/2020 06:52

A referal to a gynae wouldn't go amiss, if you are peri it might be worth considering chemically bringing the menopause forward.

Waleshasgonecompletelycrazy · 07/06/2020 07:01

I’m similar and have had an endometrial ablation and mirena coil. I’ve had huge problems with periods for most of my life and I’d recommend one or both. If you give the GP a ring they should be able to start the referral process. I didn’t want the coil either but it’s changed my life and easier periods have meant I’m healthier too as that level of blood loss was making me more susceptible to illness

Redwren · 07/06/2020 07:23

I use essential oil patches from a site called "be you", I think they're amazing! Exercise always helps me to

oohnicevase · 07/06/2020 07:26

Is feminax still available ? I used to have horrific period pains as a child ( yes to like being in labour !!)
I used to take loads of these !! After babies I don't even notice my periods luckily!!

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 07/06/2020 07:30

Before having my DD, I used to get awful period pains. I had a magnet I used to put in my underwear and it worked wonders. No idea how but it really did work. I’ll see if I can find a link.

slimecentury · 07/06/2020 07:31

Dr tried to fob me of with the Mirena coil. Which I really didn’t want. I’m just hoping this is the beginning of the end of my periods.

Don't discount it. I couldn't take the pill any longer to control my period pains and the Doctor suggested a Mirena coil. It was a blessing. It was awful for 2 weeks then it worked its magic. Over 6 months my periods went from awful to nothing. I haven't had a period in 8 years.

Moondust001 · 07/06/2020 08:05

@IrishCream123

Thank you all for your help... I’ve had a few glasses of wine which has helped me relax so not so crampy. I don’t like codeine as it spaces me out. I can’t take any other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory because of the arthritis medication. I’ve tried Mefanemic Acid before (heavy as well as painful) and they did nothing for me. Dr tried to fob me of with the Mirena coil. Which I really didn’t want. I’m just hoping this is the beginning of the end of my periods.
It may not be a "fob" - the Mirena coil is one of the most common treatments for endometriosis. When things start to return, ask your doctor to refer you to a specialist.
Snowpatrolling · 07/06/2020 16:20

@APurpleSquirrel ah that’s why it stopped working for me then! Used to be brilliant then just stopped working for me. Was gutted!

Littleyellowbowl · 07/06/2020 16:58

I don't use tampons on my heaviest days as it makes them more painful, codomal might make you feel spaced out the first couple of times you take it, but shouldn't after that (IME)
