Boring thread - can someone tell me about hiring a skip?

We have a pile of utter shite in the garage and quite a lot of garden waste/gravel so we were thinking about hiring a skip and just blitzing it over a couple of days.

Skip hire websites around here are useless.

What sort of things do I need to think about? Is it ok to just chuck anything into it or is there stuff they won’t take?

Garden waste/gravel is fine. 'Utter shite' depends Grin Liquids of any sort can be dodgy, as can electrical stuff. If you can be a bit more specific about the shite, I might be able to help.

WelcomeToTheNorth · 06/06/2020 14:10

The shite is mainly old furniture I think.

Right enough it’s been a while since I’ve ventured into that particular Aladdins cave

They don't take paint tins or fridges/freezers but pretty much anything else is fine. They say a "level load" so stack it carefully so you can get as much as possible in!

Hoohaahoo · 06/06/2020 14:12

How much garden crap do you have? We hired a big bag from a Jewsons style place as it was cheaper than a skip. I think it was around £50 and we got rid of loads of stuff.

TheQueef · 06/06/2020 14:13

They will tell you what can't go in.
You need somewhere they can drop it with a skip lorry and you need to fill it that day.
Trust me, your neighbours will fill it if you wait.

I actually plucked up the courage and called my local builders yard / skip hire and I've now got an 8 tonne skip arriving on Tuesday
Grin

That'll hold 80 bin bags of rubbish. Like PP says no liquids.

What can I put in my skip?

  • Soil/Rubble
  • Timber
  • Metal
  • Garden Waste - Paper
  • Plastic
  • General Waste - Plasterboard

What can't I put in my skip?

  • Asbestos*
  • Tyres
  • Fridge/Freezers - Paint Tins
  • Batteries
  • Electrical Items - Gas Canisters

Hope that helps!

Smash any furniture to condense the waste and decide what size you need on the amount of waste not the price.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 06/06/2020 14:16

Furniture is fine. Found this which gives you the general guidelines of what can't go in. 'TVs, computer monitors, asbestos, tyres, fluorescent tubes, fridges, paint and paint tins (unless empty), plasterboard, batteries, medical waste, gas cylinders, liquids, solvents, oil, petrol, diesel and explosives'. DH (who understands these things) said put your garden waste in first and then the furniture to maximise what you can get in.

I've used these before and they're great - details of what they take's on their site

That hippo bag price is exhorbitant!

Shop around-prices vary by company and by time (same company here can be half the price at unpopular times)
Be flexible- if you say they can drop anytime then you often get a much better price than saying I need one next Monday
Similar with collection- you usually call when it is full but if you state you are flexible it can be cheaper.
Check the size- some are tiny
Don't smash the stuff up- the recycle as much as possible and 1 mans junk can be another mans treasure.
If it needs to go on the road you need a permit (here anyway)

We have a small driveway outside the garage (although it’s a fairly steep slope) I’m hoping it could go there

I just got an 8 yard skip in london. 8 yards refer to cubic capacity not length.
