Family dinner ideas

My 21 month old, previously a great eater, has refused every evening meal I’ve made him this week. I’d assumed that this was just a toddler phase and he’d eat when hungry enough. However, my DH is of the view that I’m making our meals too ‘exotic’ and I need to offer plainer things.

This week I’ve made:

Mon: hot smoked salmon and veg - refused
Tues: bbq - he did actually eat this
Weds: moussaka - refused
Thurs: smoked haddock tart - refused
Fri: Thai prawn stir fry - refused.

I really didn’t think any of that was particularly adventurous! But to test the theory I ended up making a replacement meal of nuggets and chips this evening Hmm when he refused the stir fry, and he ate everything so he must be hungry.

I don’t want to starve my DS but nor do I want to inadvertently create a fussy eater and I’d like him to have a varied and interesting diet.

Any ideas for how to deal with meal refusal (I assume don’t give a replacement is top of the list Grin) and/or any failsafe recipes would be massively appreciated!

There’s a lot of meals between nuggets and prawn stir fry! I wouldn’t get in the habit of making him different food if he refuses the first meal as otherwise he will learn if he doesn’t eat he gets ‘treat’ food. You could leave it a while free the meal and then offer some toast or fruit etc if you think he is starving but make sure it’s not associated with refusing the dinner.

Smoked fish is an aquired taste in lots of people (I’m not keen) so maybe just normal salmon or haddock for him instead?
Also make sure there’s something on the plate you know he likes and will eat eg pasta or potato or rice or carrots or broccoli or whatever it is that goes with the meal you are having.
