Citalopram or similar for PMT/PMDD

I'm just waiting for a call back from my GP to discuss this. Or an option like it.

I remember reading somewhere on here that you can take citalopram for a few days a month and not all the time to combat PMDD.

I've tried changing my diet and using supplements. And they do help, but not enough.

I've had enough but I don't want to go on full AD's again.

Can anyone give their experience?

I take sertraline for the same reason.

I was told I could take it for 2 weeks per month, but I find I forget and stop taking it altogether. As I’m sable and happy on it, I take it all the time. Or I would if I could remember to renew my prescription!

It does take the edge off things nicely

Healthquestion101 · 05/06/2020 12:54

Me too, I'm on 50mg daily. They take the edge of but I still get PMT but not to the extent of crying over everything and feeling suicidal.

Teenytinyvoice · 05/06/2020 13:11

Yes exactly! It changes my PMT to look like what my uni flat mates used to have, not the step out into traffic, need to divorce my husband, why am I loosing my mind stuff I get without it.

So you both take it full time?

I love sertraline... it has really helped me think clearly

Todaysanewday · 05/06/2020 13:37

I have been on 50mg of Sertraline since November for the same reason. I take it every day and it has definitely worked wonders for me. I am longer unstable and having suicidal thoughts. I just feel on an even keel all the time instead of wanting to drive into a wall. Sometimes it is advised to go on the pill to help but due to past medical issues I am unable to take it.

langkaw · 05/06/2020 13:37

I was prescribed it for pmdd and take 20mg a day. PMDD is better with it but I think perimenopause as made it worse again so I supplement with Agnes castus. I have normal pmt now which lasts for a couple of days rather than 2 weeks!

langkaw · 05/06/2020 13:38

Sorry I meant to say I was prescribed citalopram

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 05/06/2020 14:05

So everyone on here takes it full time?

OP posts:
Alyssum34456 · 05/06/2020 14:08

Any reason you wouldn't want to take it full time? I did for quite a few years. Was really useful. I was told at the time that switching back and forth would mess it up and tbh can't see how it work for your brain.

Any reason you wouldn't want to take it full time

I used to take it full time but it stopped working after about 2 years and I took sertraline instead which gave me awful side effects.
So I'd like to take it half the month just for PMT in hope that it wouldn't stop being effective like before.

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 06/06/2020 16:50

bump again.
I'd really like to speak to anyone who takes it half the month, specifically for PMT/PMDD.

I've started today and I'm really not sure I've made the right decision.

blueglassandfreesias · 06/06/2020 17:14

I took it for PMDD (sertraline 50mg) and it worked absolute wonders immediately.
The only problem was that I couldn’t orgasm or cry on it so I came off it.
My pmt still fucks up my month totally though.

peaceanddove · 06/06/2020 17:59

I've taken sertraline 100mg for the last few years for my PMDD which suddenly ramped up to dangerous levels during the perimenopause. I'd always suffered one shit week per month, then it increased to two shit weeks after I turned 40. Then it turned into nearly three really shit weeks before ending up with me feeling hysterical and suicidal most of the time. Sertraline was fantastic and worked fast within just a few days. Ever since, I have always felt upbeat and well balanced all of the time and there's very little that bothers me. It's fantastic. Looking back on my life I desperately wish I had started taking sertraline thirty years ago! My PMDD spoilt so many events and occasions and caused so much upset and distress over the years Sad

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 06/06/2020 18:34

@blueglassandfreesias so you don't take SRRI's for PMT/PMDD, and it doesn't help, and you don't take it for half the month?
I'm so confused.

@peaceanddove you take it all the time?

Does anyone out there take it for two weeks a month just to combat pmt?.

OP posts:
blueglassandfreesias · 06/06/2020 19:17

@ HowFurloughCanYouGo I’m confused by what you’re confused by! 🤣

peaceanddove · 06/06/2020 19:39

Yes, I take it every day. But I know that current research suggests that just taking it for the two weeks of your luteal phase is considered as effective.

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 06/06/2020 19:52

@blueglassandfreesias sorry, I think I might have misunderstood your post.
My OP was asking if anyone took citalopram or similar for PMT/PMDD for half the month.

I think your reply said that you took AD's but not for PMT/PMDD, you don't take it for half the month and it also doesn't help your PMT.

I guess I was confused why it had any relevance.

OP posts:
blueglassandfreesias · 06/06/2020 20:02

@ HowFurloughCanYouGo I took Sertraline for PMDD and it worked well. It’s like Citalopram.

HowFurloughCanYouGo · 07/06/2020 10:01

Thanks sorry I totally misread your post originally! What a doofus.

Did you take it full time or just for half the month?

OP posts:
blueglassandfreesias · 07/06/2020 17:34

I took them for the full month because it took a while for them to stop making me feel nauseous (good for weight loss!)
So once they’d settled in I thought I may as well keep going rather than withdrawing them reasimulating.

Healthquestion101 · 09/06/2020 13:57

Apologies just saw your question. I take it full time. I had side effects at first but they went after two weeks.
