I want to make the blouse pictured (it's the only picture of it unfortunately).

Fabric suggestions are silk/rayon/georgette.

Do you think it would work ok in polycotton as a cheap 'first item in forever make? I don't want to spend too much at the moment but do feel I need something for me to do as well as all the stuff for & with the girls :)

Yes. It might be a bit stiffer/less drapey, but it will be wearable

modgepodge · 04/06/2020 20:27

I think most polycottons will be a bit stiff for that peplum and the sleeves, and it won’t hang like that. But, as PP says, it will be wearable, I just think it might look a bit different.

It’s always a good idea to make a toile of a new pattern before using expensive fabric anyway, some people choose to make a ‘wearable toile’. If you think of it like that, you may not be too disappointed if it’s not brilliant - use it as a learning experience before using more expensive fabric 🙂

modgepodge that's a good way of looking at it. I'd usually use old bedding for a toile.

I suppose I can try it and see what it ends up like.

Hmm, that went well. Fabric land's despatch time is 12 days Shock

Maybe I'll wait a little while.

I might try viscose for that.

SpeedofaSloth · 04/06/2020 21:13

Oops, just spotted it already said rayon, I was not particularly helpful there.

lucysmam · 04/06/2020 21:18

*SpeedofaSloth I was hoping to try it in something super cheap first (hence thinking it may be ok in polycotton).

I usually buy from Fabric Land though & their delivery times will feel like an age so I might hold off a while :)

I think it will work, look for a lightweight polycotton.

Going off on a tangent here, I’m impressed at making a blouse being “an easy two hour project”.
It took me an entire afternoon to make just one face mask.

lucysmam · 05/06/2020 17:34

@Bandol I've been doing a few face masks for friends as they've asked for them. They take me about half an hour each but I was quite keen sewist (sewer?) once upon a time.

It definitely won't be a 2 hour project though between the kids at home to help with school work, going to actual work, and keeping the house going. It was the style that appealed :)
