Which electricity and gas provider are you with?

Particularly if you live alone in a terraced house.

Looking for a cheap but reliable provider.

Also, is it cheaper to have both (gas and electricity) as part of one deal or separately?

You need to use a proper utility comparison website, input your usage or property details and get a range of quotes. That’s the most accurate way of working out what’s best for you.

No point is asking strangers, you need to use a comparison site and check reviews.

I'm not aware of any unreliable providers, do you mean ones with power cuts?

We’ve been with Octopus for a few years and they’ve been brilliant. We were with British Gas before and the difference in customer service between the two is huge!

I have a referral code that gives a £50 credit to new customers (and £50 credit to me) but don’t want to post it in case it looks like I’m just spamming to get credits. If you want it though, just private message me.

I don’t know if they even still exist, but we tried Outfox the Market once as they were by far the cheapest, and they were the worst company I’ve ever dealt with. I ended up having to go to the ombudsman over a dispute. So my advice would be stay clear of them 😂

Whoever you pay for your gas and electricity has no affect on who supplies it. It is usually cheaper to get both from the same provider.

The Moneysavingexpert cheap energy club is good for comparing prices, weeding out anywhere with shit customer service and keeping an eye on when you need to switch again.

I just look about once a year or when a deal ends. But you need to do a comparison for your area/usage as prices vary across the country and down to what your G/E split is.

We're currently with Avro and they've been trouble free so far, with a big bonus that they don't supply smart meters so they're not pestering me like E.on did.

One unexpected positve benefit of lockdown is that my supplier and I'm sure all the others have stopped the pestering phone calls Grin With a bit of luck my contract will be up before they re-start

use a comparison site. Knock up a quick spreadsheet and compare the unit prices and standing charges you pay now with the proposed ones.

always cheaper to have the same supplier for both.

gas should be around 2.5p a unit now, electric somewhere between 12-18p a unit, standing charge around 20p a day or less per fuel. Fix while you can.

don't use the really small suppliers as they go bust frequently - won't cut you off but adds cost for everyone.

most will want to install a smart meter when regulations permit. These may or may not work properly, be warned. Also make a diary note for 10 years time when the battery in the gas meter will run out and cut off your gas.

Octopus for us too! No complaints.
