Opals... unlucky?

Mascotte · 03/06/2020 20:17

So, there's the superstition that opals are unlucky to wear unless you're born in October. I wasn't.

I know that this is ridiculous. But I'm still slightly reluctant to buy the beautiful opal ring I like.

Would you wear an opal or is it too "unlucky?"

I'm annoying myself as I'm normally a very rational person. Though I would cry if o broke a mirror 😂

I think the "unlucky" bit is because opals can be a little brittle. You'll need to be careful with the ring but otherwise ignore the superstition.

I am biased, I have opal rings and earrings. I really like them.

RobinHumphries · 03/06/2020 20:20

I love opals and wasn’t born in October. I’d love to see a picture of the ring you are liking

SpeedofaSloth · 03/06/2020 20:20

I like opals, not my birthstone.

I remember my Grandmother used to say this. No idea why though. Unhelpful, sorry Grin. I like them, though.

LadyOfTheCanyon · 03/06/2020 20:25

I'm not woo in the slightest. There was an opal in my family that nobody wanted (there were pearls and diamonds further up the inheritance line) so it got passed to me as the least favoured child. (Thanks, Nan!) I didn't mind it in the slightest. It was a Fire Opal and in all honesty was as ugly as fuck. That bloody ring used to get lost and then show up again months later for YEARS.

OldLace · 03/06/2020 20:26

Opals are lovely! Full of flashes of fire and colour.
Treat yourself if you can afford it and ignore silly superstitions :)

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 03/06/2020 20:26

I have opals. I don't wear them often because they are fragile stones and I am not good at remembering to take rings off to wash my hands, but they are beautiful and I was not born in October and I am not aware of them having caused anything terrible to happen to me.

Mascotte · 03/06/2020 20:28

Ooh.. good to hear.. this is the ring, there was another one too but I can't find it! opal ring

They also do a gorgeous pearl one and a moonstone one.

I remember an old superstition that if an opal changed colour it meant very bad luck, usually a death.

Mascotte · 03/06/2020 20:28

But I've never bought from them, just looking for ideas

Strongly woo person. Refused to even touch an opal for years. Saw one in a shop on holiday last year after a particularly terrible couple of years with pnd. Bought it for myself as October is my dd's birthday month and wanted to recognise her birth with a piece of jewellery. Put it on. Within 5 hours had cut open my foot and needed a plastic surgeon to reconstruct it. Put it away to either sell or give away and haven't been able to find it since

Dollywilde · 03/06/2020 20:32

I reject superstitions as I loved the idea of an emerald engagement ring and my mum put me off it on the basis green is unlucky in engagement rings. It’s been 5 years and I still wish I’d gone for the emerald ring (not that I’d swap the one I have now, but y’know...) so I say sod superstition!

loutypips · 03/06/2020 20:33

Opals are considered unlucky due to the fact that they break really easily.

User0ne · 03/06/2020 20:43

I thought you were going to say you'd got a packet with no red or purple ones in it Grin

TimeWastingButFun · 03/06/2020 20:57

Unlucky?? What does that mean, it's superstitious nonsense. Wear what you like!!

TimeWastingButFun · 03/06/2020 20:59

Ah it's beautiful!

Not sure what woo means...

Mascotte · 03/06/2020 21:08

I know in my head it's just silly superstition so hoped others might convince me 😃

pussycatinboots · 03/06/2020 21:15

My Auntie Alice left me an opal and ruby pendant.
My mum was horrified. Flapping her hands around, saying it was unlucky!😱
I ignored her and kept the pendant. It's beautiful, but delicate, so isn't worn often.
I did wear it when I got married though - just to annoy my mum!🤯😲🤣

PlatinumBrunette · 03/06/2020 21:16

Opals are stunning, but very soft so may break easily. It’s not my birthstone but I happily wear opals. I even had a wonderful ring to celebrate my freedom from an abusive relationship - It brought me loads of good luck (or not, depending on superstitions!)

Found this which may explain some of the woo (apols for long link, never did get the hang of the short ones here) www.nationaljeweler.com/blog/7875-why-opals-are-bad-luck-and-other-gemstone-legends

WinWinnieTheWay · 03/06/2020 21:17

An opal cannot attract good or bad luck. They do not influence how people behave, pandemics, natural disasters etc. All of that is superstitious bullshit.

My dad thinks that leaving the loo seat up is unlucky - how batshit is that?!!

Mascotte · 03/06/2020 21:20

@WinWinnieTheWay I know.. I'm annoying myself 😂

OP posts:
RiftGibbon · 03/06/2020 21:22

Opals are neither lucky nor unlucky.
If you like one, then wear it. :)
I have one and wear it from time to time. The only reason I don't wear it more often is that despite the rest of me swelling like Jabba the Hut my fingers have somehow shrunk.

Mascotte · 03/06/2020 21:22

And thanks @PlatinumBrunette I love the Arab tradition of trapped lightning!

OP posts:
Beamur · 03/06/2020 21:24

I have a very lovely opal ring that was my Nans. I'm not going to let superstition stop me from wearing it.
