DH abnormal liver function, freaking out.

mid 30's, healthy, pretty fit, no weight loss thank God but felt rough enough to complain about it since the weekend; lethargic, fatigued, nauseous, weak, itchy skin with chest pain and v dark wee.

GP ran bloods yesterday and called this morning to say they show liver abnormalities. Referred for full liver screen (Friday) and ultrasound (ASAP but likely week after next due to covid backlog).

We are both terrified and not sure what to say really. Hoping there are - many - things this could be that aren't cancer??

He has twice in the past reacted badly to a long ish afternoon in the pub, not student scale lash or anything (working parents, left that long in the past!) but 7/8 pints over an afternoon with food - been almost unconscious and vomited hard for 24h, ending up in A&E. they said then his liver function was abnormal but they clearly didn't believe he hadn't just been on a mega bender so of course it was. He did a whisky tasting on zoom on sat with mates (eye roll) - maybe 5 whiskies in total plus a glass of red, not a raging lash I admit but definitely not a normal night by standards. Desperately hoping he just has some underlying endocrine imbalance / sensitivity to bigger quantities of alcohol - is this realistic?

Any reassurance would be gratefully received, if it's possible. I know internet doth not equal a doctor but we are struggling to think about anything else right now. TIA anyway x

I had a single gallstone that became stuck (and then dislodged itself 🤷‍♀️) and had deranged LFTs for a little while afterwards. All went back to normal on their own, I was advised to avoid alcohol for about 6months afterwards but my bloods had already returned to normal within about 2 months anyway :)

Fingers crossed for you!

Best of luck for both you and your husband!

Do hope he has had a scan to look at his liver, gallbladder and pancreas?

Updating here while DS screams the house down through the night, just in case anyone else finds/needs the thread in the future and bc so much nice advice received!

6 rounds of bloods and an ultrasound via hepatic specialist at a second hospital and they still don't know what it is; LFT's are returning to normal and DH is asymptomatic and has been for a good couple of weeks so their best guess is a virus that either hasn't yet been identified by science (because none of us can get enough of those in 2020...............) or one that typically manifests in different ways but in DH's case has gone after his liver. They have at least ruled out everything scary (cancer, HIV etc) and all viruses that do commonly attack the liver, including all Hepatitis.

He has a follow up in a couple of weeks so if we find out any more will update thread again - in the meantime thank you all v much indeed for kind words and contributions, it gave me a lot of peace on a really shit day.
