Holiday ideas for Devon/Cornwall

Hi,

Once it's safe to do so we're looking to rent a house/cottage in Devon/Cornwall for a week away.

Can anyone give ideas of areas which to look at based on the following requirements:

Couple 40s with one dog
Looking for somewhere with nice pubs/restaurants. Would be nice to have a mix of upmarket places and day to day pub food
Looking to rent a cottage (I can find somewhere just need to be sure on which areas first)

Was thinking Padstow or Rock but it's been so long since I've ventured any further that Dorset I just don't know where is best.

TIA

the apartment below in St Ives might be worth a look?

there is a variety of restaurants and pubs, and I can recommend the restaurant at Retallack Resort, Winnards Perch, St Columb Major, Cornwall, TR9 6DE x

@sleepismysuperpower1 thankyou I'll take a look at the. What's St Ives like as a place? Is it fairly lively?

I don't like Padstow and Rock, it is a lovely area but the people in the pubs and restaurants are not mostly not friendly to tourists in my experience.
Mousehole would be a lovely base, lots of places to visit and nice restaurants in the village. People there are a lot more pleasant to tourists I have found. Possibly because there are less of them?

Not location specific, but have a look at Canopy and Stars. It rents out unique holiday cottages, and they're all really nice.

It depends what time of year you go, although I couldn't tell you what it will be like during the current situation obviously! We have been in the summer and it was busy, lots of families as it's a family friendly place. you are also near penzance (20 minute drive) which has more to do once you have explored the tate etc in st ives x

Id also steer clear of the Padstow area just because it gets so incredibly busy, and its not a big place. Have a look at Looe, I think its beautiful. Personally I love The Lizard and Kynance Cove, but its out in the sticks. Falmouth is the main town in the county, so if you wanted to be near loads of places to eat out you could look at renting somewhere near there? Steer clear of Redruth, I dont think its that nice!

Fowey is nice (pronounced Foy) It’s much quieter than St.Ives and it has some lovely shops, pubs, coastal and woodland walks etc. Plus you can hop on a boat to go to Mevagissey.
I’m biased though because it’s my neck of the woods :)

If you do decide to go to St.Ives, go in the winter. It’s quiet, beautiful and atmospheric. The only time I ever set foot in St.Ives in the summer is to see my friends. Locals try to avoid it because it’s just too busy.

We love Perranporth, the beach is huge and dog friendly, it's in a great location to explore the rest of Cornwall as nothing is too far for a day trip.

There's a bar on the beach which is great to sit outside on the sand watching the sunsets.

Bee222 as you live in the Fowey area can I ask when people are thinking that the shops and restaurants might open again. I can’t imagine how they will ever be able to open whilst social distancing is in place. I’m sure the shop owners are all wanting to open their doors as soon as possible but where will visitors queue to get in. The pavements are so narrow and the road through is not wide enough to allow pedestrians to stand on it.
I’m desperate for my Fowey fix but don’t think I’ll be visiting any time soon - it’s undoubtedly a beautiful little place but without the restaurants and the shops a self catering holiday won’t be much of one.
