Where do you keep your bread/crumpets/muffins etc?

I had a bread bin and it took up too much space so I got a cylindrical one that wasn't any good for anything more than a loafso I got rid of that too. I now use my slim not much good for anything except bread and cereal cupboard but things get pushed to the back, forgotten about, and go mouldy. What's your perfect bread storage solution?

In the bread bin. That's kind of what it's there for.

In a large Tupperware box in the fridge.

I always kept bread in the bread bin, but I’ve got a really warm kitchen, and it goes mouldy really quickly. My dad kept telling me to keep it in the fridge, so I tried it to prove him wrong, and haven’t had a mouldy loaf since. It seems to last longer and I haven’t noticed It going stale. Crumpets tend to live in the bread bin as they don’t last long with my 14yo ds!

Use a Brabantia Fall Front Bread Bin. Takes a lot. Keep any extras in cupboard.

Zisforstripyoss · 03/06/2020 00:59

I put bakery products in the freezer - we can't eat them quickly enough before they go stale or mouldy if they're in the bread bin or similar.

In the bread bin deffo not in the fridge

As a carb addict, I just cant compute this!

I had the same problem with some items getting pushed to the back of the cupboard and hate stuff like bread in on my surfaces. I now use plastic storage boxes in the cupboard, that can be pulled out like a drawer.

One for cereals, one for dinner carbs, rice, pasta etc, and one for bread products. It works well for us.

For those of us addicts who are trying to wean ourselves off carb loading, having the bread out of the way in the freezer is a huge help.

In the salad drawer in the fridge.

Same here, REALLY warm house, it's only been up 5 years and I'm sure when asked how much insulation the builders just went yes.

So food gets absolutely destroyed in my kitchen, so fridge it is.

pinktaxi · 03/06/2020 09:37

Only a bread bin. The fridge and freezer dry out the bread and it's only fit for toasting. Defrosted frozen bread tastes chewy and fridge bread tastes stale.

MeadowHay · 03/06/2020 09:40

In a cupboard. It's kept at the front of the cupboard and we don't have tons of bread things in it at any one time so nothing ever gets pushed to the back and forgotten about. But I am also quite a planner when it comes to food and knowing what is in the cupboards/fridge with what dates etc to avoid food waste, we have very little food waste.

TimeWastingButFun · 03/06/2020 09:40

We have a ceramic one in the worktop but it has a chopping board lid which is a bit of a space saver.

MeadowHay · 03/06/2020 09:42

I freeze extras sometimes and find it's fine defrosted but I can't eat bread etc that have been in the fridge unless toasted, I think you can really tell the difference. My DM keeps them in the fridge if it's hot. But we eat ours quick enough that we don't need to anyway.

PickAChew · 03/06/2020 09:44

Fresh bread in a lock n lock box on top of the fridge. Packaged bread in a cupboard which is a combined carb and booze cupboard.

PickAChew · 03/06/2020 09:46

And bread does go stale on the fridge. Something to do with the stRch crystallising.

42andcounting · 03/06/2020 09:55

If I've used it last, the bread bin. If DH has used it last, the worktop next to the bread bin. He appears to have a moral objection to the bread bin Grin

Ghostlyglow · 03/06/2020 09:58

Mostly in the freezer

midnightstar66 · 03/06/2020 10:05

On top of the microwave is about my only spare space without taking up limited counter space. I don't have a freezer.

AlCalavicci · 04/06/2020 21:47

@mrbob ,
I have heard that before but either i cant tell or mine is not in there long enough for it to be a problem def the latter plus I only ever eat it toasted so it doesn't matter if it is a bit dry .

SistemaAddict · 05/06/2020 00:26

Bread takes up such a lot of room in the freezer. I do but extra crumpets and muffins and freeze a pack of each every week to make sure they last. Sliced bread is ok in the freezer but with making my own then it gets used within 2 days. I've yet to have a cupboard sort out but have bought some sistema bakery containers for wraps, crumpets, muffins. All these things don't come with decent packaging that can be sealed dvd in once opened so they start going stake if by some miracle they aren't all used the day I get them. Not having a toaster has put a stop to dd making bagels 15 minutes before dinner is ready. Freezing them would help even more. But bread needs to be out for sandwiches.

OP posts:
RoiseCap · 05/06/2020 00:30

If they're going to be eaten quickly then the cupboard but mostly the freezer because my DDs are unpredictable. One week the bagels will be gone in a second and the next I'd have a mouldy pack if we didn't freeze them.

Minesateaorthree · 05/06/2020 00:38

Freezer for our sliced loaves/crumpets/scotch pancakes. Unsliced bakery loaves get eaten within a couple of days. Have got a lovely large enamel breadbin which is used for wrapped cakes (and the overflow storage for tablet medicines- older teens here so not a problem).
