As in actually staying at home, and making the everything relaxing for all.
Doesn't look like we'll be able to go away at all this year now, and I'd love to do something fun for the kids.

Just wondered if anyone has done this before, and has ideas? Or WWYD if you did.

Just to add that I know it may sound 'naff' to some of you, it's just a little something to change up a week for us, and perhaps have hopefully have a bit of fun.

Camping in the garden.
Fire pit when it's dark and toasting marshmallows.
Projecting a film onto a white wall/sheet.
Treasure hunt.
Nature trail.

This is not naff at all! I love the idea. I would draw up a holiday timetable - we are not very good at going with the flow. Day trips, water fights, face packs, family films with popcorn, pass the parcel, a new garden toy (we have a hoop and a hockey set).

When I check 'threads I'm on', it says I have 2 replies from @Nottobesoldseparately and @SummerHouse. When I click on the thread to reply, it only has my OP Confused

I was wondering where I had gone! Looks sorted now.

SummerHouse · 02/06/2020 13:55

How old are the kids op?

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 02/06/2020 14:16

Yep, all sorted now.

How would day trips be managed in the current situation do you think?

DC are 6 / 10 / 16 years old.

Oh, and the escape from everyday chores?
Little touches to make it feel like a self catering place?

Maybe tidy the house and catch up with the washing on day 1, and then vow not to do anything for a week? You'll then have the 'end of holiday experience' of dealing with a week's worth of washing in one go at the end.

Have as much easy, treaty holiday type food as you like. Kelloggs variety pack cereal, or a chocolatey one that you don't normally have. Cooked breakfasts - some cafes are still doing takeaway breakfasts so see if there are any near you?

Takeaways, meal deals, barbecues, restaurant deliveroos, ice creams from the supermarket to have at home, whatever is a treat to you. As little cooking as possible.

What else depends on what's available nearby and what you've done so far in lockdown. All our big city parks are now open, after being closed until a couple of weeks ago, so get out and walk round those. We have a few farm shops near us with small petting zoos and ice cream counters, one is in walking distance of our house, so a walk there for an ice cream is a nice couple of hours out.

There's some attractions starting to come back, like drive in cinema, so it's just a matter of taking advantage of what's available to you. If you have a quiet beach within driving distance, you could go there, remembering to factor in a service station or supermarket toilet stop, as beachside toilet blocks might not be open.

Reading, films, box sets. Remember it's about relaxing and family time together, so whatever you want to do.

I've done it several times.

  • I clean the house beforehand, so no housework for the week.
- Food shopping is all pre-prepared/ready chopped ingredients, or heat and eat type stuff, maybe I'll go to Waitrose rather than Aldi, that type of thing. I might make a list of special meals or go with the flow. - I also have a daily list of things I want to do or see or go to. (I also have working staycations where I crack through lists of domestic jobs like a woman possessed and I really enjoy those too). - I quite often have one day of "completely nothing" too, where I don't need to use my brain or my body at all. I need those to appreciate the others!
