Richmond Schools

Hi - is there anyone that can help me with schools for my 5 year old and 7 year old in Richmond. There is space at The Russell School but not sure if that is any good. Also, areas around Richmond - what are the nicest areas?
We are a family of 5 and would like to be able to park and have a garden. Thanks

The Russel school is meant to be good according to what I have read/heard.

ScottishDiblet · 02/06/2020 12:43

Hello! I know some of Richmond quite well. Are you thinking of renting or buying? Do you have a budget in mind?

KittySH · 02/06/2020 13:22

Thanks for the responses.
We are thinking of renting to begin with (up to say £4500 pm) and then buying once we know a bit more. Budget up to £1.6 - 1.7 mil.
I think the Russell has space in both year groups. Also St Richards CofE and St Mary's CofE.
Heard that The Vineyard is the best but there is a long waitlist so we would have to live on the doorstep. We also need to think about our 2 year old and where she could go to nursery (ideally somewhere outdoorsy). We are coming from Norway and have loads of space so ideally would like a garden or a park very close by (I know Richmond Park is lovely).

So my question is -

  • out of the schools i have mentioned that have space, which is the best one?
  • the Russell School, I can't find any feedback on this school? Do you know anyone at this school?
  • Should we consider other areas to be able to eventually buy a house and be at a good school?
  • Is Petersham / Ham a nice area to live? any streets we should avoid?

Sorry about all the questions. Any help is so appreciated xx

Well this sounds like a great dilemma to have!

SIL & BIL live in the area you're looking and it's absolutely lovely. Hopefully you'll receive some good advice here!

KittySH · 02/06/2020 13:42

@TokyoSushi - thank you so much :)

@ScottishDiblet - thanks for your help :)

Hi! Exciting! Ham and Peters ham are very nice and do have plenty of green space of course. Will you be needing public transport for getting into central London for work at all? If so you might want to look more towards Richmond itself (or perhaps Kew Gardens or north or east sheen for the trains. Plenty of good primary schools but of course as you say it’s about getting a place at this stage.

KittySH · 03/06/2020 09:07

@scottishDiblet thanks. We don't need to get into central London but we would like to be able to walk to some restaurants / activities and not always have to drive. If we got into Holy Trinity where would you recommend we lived?
Do you know The Russell School? Any feedback on this one?
Thanks x

Ah for Holy Trinity I think you could go for sheen - you have a good budget but not enough to buy in Berwyn road or Sheen common drive which would be an easy walk to the school. Still (Going on what is available to rent and buy on Rightmove) I think you could go for temple sheen or Palewell park area - both close to Richmond Park of course but also sheen common and the woods and also Palewell Park which are great for walks and fun for children. Sheen itself has a few nice restaurants and cafes and, crucially, is walkable for Richmond (or quick drive or bus ride). Very child friendly, there will be a nice community and lots of other parents etc. I do not know anything about Russell school I’m afraid. I grew up in sheen and it’s lovely with lots to do for children outdoors!

St Margaret’s just over Richmond bridge is nice. Good primary and secondary school, marble hill park, nice row of shops and a few coffee shops and restaurants.

ScottishDiblet · 03/06/2020 12:30

Yes I 100% agree about st Margaret’s. Lovely place!! And walkable to Richmond v easily. Don’t know about schools.

KittySH · 03/06/2020 13:30

Thanks - so is Holy Trinity such a good school that you would move to the area for it? :)

Ahh that is v hard to answer. It’s so personal and I would say that depends on what you look for in a school. I personally wouldn’t choose a faith school but that’s just me. I do know people whose children have been there and were very happy with it but I just can’t say either way. Sorry.

Estan · 22/07/2020 14:50

St. Margaret's is lovely. But the CE schools are not as highly regarded as they once were. Orleans Primary is really good but hard to get into. So is Deer Park. And there is one being built on the Twickenham side of the Richmond Bridge that I think is highly regarded. Orleans Park (senior school) is not as highly sought after as it was a few years ago. Gems Twickenham Primary Academy is great. They are small and academic and a really happy and nurturing school that genuinely cares about every child's academic achievement. Walsegrave girls school (which is excellent) is nearby. If you were to look at TPA/Waldegrave this is closer to Twickenham Green and you will get more house for your money in this area whilst still being quite close to Twickenham Station.

Sorry to be posting on an old thread. But couldn't find any other thread on Russell. We have just been offered a place in The Russell and it would be wonderful to know what others think of the school.

@KittySH Did you happen to decide for The Russell?

KittySH · 28/01/2021 12:57

Hi - we landed up at Sheen Mount so I don't have any experience with The Russell. Good luck x

Hi @KittySH, I have just read your thread. Have your DC started going to sheen mount? If yes, what do you think of the school?

KittySH · 26/03/2021 06:13

Hi @moonchips
Yes they have. It’s an amazing school. I have been so impressed with everything so far - teachers, facilities, friendliness, parents etc. it has all been wonderful.
The only thing that could change things is that the head (who has been there for 17 years) is leaving in Sept. I’m sure they will find someone that is also good though.

x

Hi @KittySH, we are planning to move to Richmond by eo June with our 4 and 3 y.o. daughters, and are considering the Holy Trinity school.

I’ve read your thread and it seems you’d looked at both the HT and Sheen Mount, and decided for the latter. I guess you’ve researched both and by now might even know more since you already live in the area. How would you say they compare?

How about other schools vs. these two, e.g. Marshgate?

KittySH · 17/05/2021 09:50

Hi @Tom81
We love Sheen Mount! Been so impressed with the school.
We live very close to the school so I think it depends where you will live. If you live nearer to HT then I would recommend going there. It’s also meant to be a brilliant school. I don’t know anything about Marsgate I’m afraid.
If you want to know more please feel free to ask :)
