Does anyone cycle with a baby in a bike seat?

I love cycling and when my baby is old enough I will get him cycling too. But I miss going out on my bike now and I was thinking it will be years yet until I can go again. I then saw a man cycle with his baby ok a rear seat carrier and lightbulb went off. However, it does look a bit terrifying and wondered if anyone uses one and can give me some tips. My baby is six months old and I understand most seats carry babies from 9 months but you can get younger more reclined seats for six month old babies. Any information would be helpful.

You can get trailers to fix on the back of your bike and put baby inside in their car seat. Then when you get to where your going you unhook and push trailer like a pushchair

My husband has our 1 year old on his bike in a rear seat. We tried a weeride but he didn't like the breeze in his face Grin I believe they do a shield screen thing but we didn't want that.

I am in the netherlands and babies until 12-18 months are either in a trailer or cargobike in a car seat or and a sling/carrier.
however, cycling here is very different than UK.
I think a trailer with roll cage & car seat is the safest if you don't have continuous good cycling infrastructure.

Again thank you so much for the recommendations. I'm going to go through the websites. I have a hard tail mountain bike but with high front suspension so a trailer probably would work better then a seat, but I'm not sure. I'll do some more research but at least I know where to start now. I'm actually starting to feel quite excited. I haven't been on my bike for nearly two years and with lockdown seeing all these people go by me I really miss it. I don't have a removal car seat so will look into all the options for a trailer. We have some nice gentle country parks near us so I'll judge accordingly. I think he'll love it though because he loves me running with his pram (which sadly I'm too unfit to keep up for long!).

All of mine were in a rear bike seat from 6 months. Strapped in, with a helmet. No problems.
Trailers are OK off road but not good for city traffic. Lots of people here use those Dutch cargo bikes with a big wooden box on front for very small children

We got the Thule Yepp seat which is similar to the weeride.

Hello Mumsnet, just want to say there is this really great website that does trailer and bike seat hire for little ones to save on money of purchasing. You can also try before you buy and buy the product after the hire.

It's www.kidsbiketrailers.co.uk/

Terrifies me, as do people who ski with tiny tots in backpacks.
Are people really so confident that they’re never going to take a tumble?

Wr always used a seqt that was behind me. Helmet on and we rode t nursery every day on cycle tracks and on roads. Now she is 3 she is on a little saddle thatbis fixed in front of me and she has an extra set of handle bars to hold on to.

Fyi, there are companies who make these seats especially for taking your kids mountain biking once they are over 3

I had DS1 in a Co-Pilot Taxi from 8 months. Very common here in Cambridge! Later I had him and his brother in a trailer (with big orange flag). Both always wore helmets.

I have a rear seat for DS, he didn’t start using it until 18 months but absolutely loves it. One thing to remember, having that weight over the back wheel massively alters the bikes centre of gravity. Be very careful, if the front wheel lifts the tiniest bit off the ground the whole thing will go over backwards and it’s not easy to catch!

Looked at the trailers but didn’t think they were all that safe. Loads of moronic drivers in my area and the cycle lanes can be a bit sporadic.
