Anyone cancelled flights and accepted a voucher from the airline?

We are on the brink of cancelling our mid-August holiday to the USA. The flights were paid in full at the time of booking so we either need to wait and hope the flight is cancelled so we get a full refund, or we cancel and accept a voucher from the airline.
Has anyone accepted a voucher? If so, does the expiry date on the voucher mean you have to have travelled by that date or just used the voucher by that date (with flights booked for a later date)? I appreciate that terms and conditions will vary between airline.

Watching with interest as I’m in the same position ( late August , USA holiday) . I think it does depend on the airline . Norwegian Airlines have offered me a voucher to be booked by end of 2021 , for travel by end of 2022
That sounds ok to me, but I worry about the airline not doing bust before I travel

On the whole I’d rather have the refund , simon just sitting tight and waiting for them to cancel flight . The other hope is that FCO advice stays the same and I’ll use my travel insurance or credit card to claim money back

I’m in similar position. Flights booked to Greece in July. Tui have not cancelled (yet) and we paid in full when booking. Reading the website it looks like I could get a credit voucher but not a refund if I cancel. But of course if I wait for them to cancel and they run the flight I risk getting nothing back.

The law changed last month and even if they cancel, they can offer you a voucher and not a cash refund. Each airline is deciding what to do. There's a lot on the travel forums about it. Apparently you should be able to refuse a voucher and press for the money but it's not that easy.

I had two lots of flights cancelled ba, I phoned and insisted on a refund rather than vouchers. I waited for them to cancel, I definitely didn't want a voucher.

No I phone for a full refund as dont know where my parents will be living by the time my next holidays are.

TheCanterburyWhales · 01/06/2020 17:22

Martin Lewis says BA are being OK.
The legal entitlement to a refund apparently is only under EU law. Outside the EU it depends on that country's legislation..
I have 16 flights booked for students this summer, would love refunds but realistically it's probably going to be vouchers (Alitalia)

We had booked a holiday with ba. Originally accepted a voucher, then a month later they gave us a refund.

I'm also in same position. Paid in full for flights to Portugal at the end of July. The event we were going to has been postponed to 2021 so we will want flights at some point. Can't decide if I want to wait for them to be cancelled and get our money back or move the flights to next year and hope the airline don't go bust in the meantime. If the rumors in the press is to be believed the flights might not get cancelled by the end of July and we'll have no choice but change the flights. No point trying to claim on insurance as the excess is almost as much as the flight.

In same position - I'm not accepting a voucher, but I've booked on Barclaycard, so should be able to claim cost off there if nothing else, especially as I heard that the airline was on shaky ground before COVID, so seems likely to go under before we could claim a later flight from them. I have a feeling it won't be cancelled, nor will they fold before then so will just have to call the best time to try to get money back.

It’s a bit of a gamble either way, We Had flights cancelled in May and are awaiting refund, also have flights for July, which are not yet cancelled and we don’t know what to do for the same reasons
As would rather wait in get a refund but I suspect they might be operating by then, and if they are and we choose to cancel we won’t get a refund
