SUE: Siw or Soo???

TwatCat · 31/05/2020 22:46

I never realised until today that people pronounce the name Sue differently. So is it:

Siw as in new or
Soo as in too?

I say Siw, but the Sue (Susan) I know, today said her name is pronounced Soo (Soosan) and I was mind blown. I always thought it was pronounced Siw (Siwsan) and our workplace was divided on the issue, about half and half of Siw vs Soo.

I have never come across Siwzan.

Soozan is Suzanne

I would say Soozun is Susan

alexdgr8 · 31/05/2020 23:07

no idea what you mean.#
i hope this is not another pork doesn't rhyme with fork thing.
to me few, too, new, sue, all rhyme.
what kind of accent do you have, or what region are you from.
just say it the way it's owner does.
not that i can see more than one way to say it.

In the East Midlands new is just noo, not nyew.

With my original accent few, due and new all have that y sound in them.

Sue, however, has only ever been soo for me.

Ah - must be them! I can’t describe it any other way than siw either - but it totally is a sound!

Whyhellodaffodil · 31/05/2020 23:08

Or must be that then even, must preview!

TwatCat · 31/05/2020 23:09

@BernardsarenotalwaysSaints Soo, too, few & new all sound the same in my accent...
They sound different to me. Soo too have an ooooooowh sound. Whereas Few and new are short Fiw and Niw sounds. The oo in Soo and too are elongated.

It doesn't. Neither does boot rhyme with foot. In my accent - I know it does in others Grin

Destroyedpeople · 31/05/2020 23:10

I know exactly what you mean OP.....I remember people saying 'siw' or 'siwsan' when I was a child. I think it would sound a bit affected now. Everyone just says soo.

frazzledfatty · 31/05/2020 23:13

I'm confused by what sound siw is? What accent do you have op?

TwatCat · 31/05/2020 23:14

@iklboo It doesn't. Neither does boot rhyme with foot. In my accent - I know it does in others

Fork rhymes with pork

But I agree, boot definitely doesn't rhyme with foot. Boot has an ooooo sound. Foot has a short fūt sound.

Fork & pork definitely don't rhyme in my accent. Pork is pourk. Manchester here. I love differences in accents.

Letthemysterybe · 31/05/2020 23:16

Boot doesn’t rhyme with foot, but my mind is blown that pork doesn’t necessarily rhyme with fork!

lottiegarbanzo · 31/05/2020 23:17

Ohhh, this is one of those pronunciation ones where the version you think is normal, is the one everyone else thinks is odd, so you're trying to explain the wrong one.

I can imagine a Welsh person saying Sooo and tooo with a really emphatic 'oooow' sound.

Most English people don't do that, so our soo (rhymes with too, to, two, new, shoe) is your siw. (We just have no idea what you mean when you write siw).

Mother87 · 31/05/2020 23:17

Siw like Siu Mai? Dim Sim dumpling of loveliness?

Bananasplitlady · 31/05/2020 23:18

I'm South Walian - I say Siw. It rhymes with... well nothing really but maybe it's more like few than who.

Thisismytimetoshine · 31/05/2020 23:19

It's Soo, not Seeyou. And fork and pork rhyme. Confused

Whyhellodaffodil · 31/05/2020 23:19

Knew it was valleys OP - I’m cardiff so say soo but I had friends from Porth’s voices in my head when I was thinking about it!

lottiegarbanzo · 31/05/2020 23:26

Few though - that does take you into the Syou realm. Like the way Hyacinth Bouquet would say suit as syoot, likewise tissue as tiss-you.

backseatcookers · 31/05/2020 23:28

I think the siw sound is as there is a slight pause (minuscule) just before the w and the W is slightly more pronounced than in soo.

frazzledfatty · 31/05/2020 23:29

In my London accent fork rhymes with pork. Foot does not rhyme with boot.

lottiegarbanzo · 31/05/2020 23:30

But surely only a Welsh person would actually pronounce the 'w'?

TwatCat · 31/05/2020 23:30

It rhymes with Huw, which is pronounced different to Hugh, Huw is Hiw whereas Hugh is Hyou.

Same as Siw is Siw like Hiw. But it doesn't have that y sound after the s

forvo.com/word/huw/
This is the sound for Huw.

Maybe a Yew tree is different?
Yew doesn't rhyme with too. Yew is also like Yiw.

I need to hear a voice recording

dementedpixie · 31/05/2020 23:31

Scottish: fork does not rhyme with pork. Boot rhymes with foot
