What gifts do I want for my 30th?

It's nearly my 30th birthday and my family are asking what I'd like.

Pre-lockdown, I'd planned on either going away with my husband for a long weekend or having all my family over for a big buffet/party sort of thing, but obviously none of that will be happening now.

Have quite a lot of family members, some of whom (my husband, my parents) will be looking to get me quite a 'big' present (say, £150-300), as well as lots of family/in laws who want to get me a present in the sort of £10-30 bracket. In my family, people always ask for ideas; no-one ever just picks something so it's definitely up to me to tell them what I'd like. I often ask for vouchers (for local restaurant/cinema/garden centre) but given that we can't go anywhere, that seems a bit pointless and I think people would be reluctant to give them.

I appreciate it's a lovely dilemma to have but I have no ideas and they keep asking!

A bit about me:

I'm 4 months pregnant with my first child
Not very girly, so would never consider something like a fancy handbag/shoes
Don't wear make up/use skincare products/nail varnish
Like gardening, crafts, running (when not pregnant), cooking, baking, reading, days out with family, board games...

What should I ask for? What did you ask for/want/get?

Thanks!

I started a post exactly like this about a month ago and the majority of posters suggested one of those new dyson hair thingys. I think it’s about making styling your hair an easy task so might be good if you’re not interested in standing for ages primping!

My husband bought me a kitchen aid if you don’t have one? I love it!

GreyGardens88 · 31/05/2020 20:23

Amazon giftcard
Personalised Emma Bridgewater mugs
WoodWick candles

raspberryk · 31/05/2020 20:24

What didn't you get for your 21st that you'd like?
At 21 I got Le Creuset kettle, 2x casseroles, dishes etc and still going strong 12 years later. I hated the frying pans though so I got rid. And a very nice watch.
For my 30th I chose some earrings from my dad.

What about some bespoke running shoes with personalisation - might be more of an IOU gift if you won’t be running until after your baby is here?

The Dyson airwrap is incredible but probably only if you would use it daily. I use mine every day now and even with a toddler I can curl/blow dry my hair as good as it looks once I’ve been to the hairdressers.

Do you wear jewellery? Monica Vinader does lovely friendship bracelets and each colour means something different. They’re not overly girly, baby friendly in that they won’t scratch or nip baby’s skin and are suitable for every day wear.

As PP said a KitchenAid would be good if you like baking, or a cooking subscription service? Notonthehighstreet have lots of them.

On my wishlist atm (I keep it for when people ask me for birthdays and Xmas) I have

  • robotic hoover and mop (probably not what you want for your 30th birthday lol)
  • wax melter and Parma Violet scented melts)
  • Inline skates, helmet and pads
  • garden solar ducks
  • Eeboo 1000 piece jigsaw
  • Eeboo ketchbook
  • picalilly sweatshirt (I really like the crab and the vegetable one)
  • fancy chocolate Truffles
  • some rainbow earrings I saw on notonthehighstreet
  • Jellycat amuseable cloud bag charm
  • watermelon flavoured gin
  • magic painting book

A bit of a random list I know

I got a digital camera for my 30th but I've rarely used it

GreyGardens88 · 31/05/2020 20:30

Flower subscription from Bloom and Wild

CaptainDragon · 31/05/2020 20:35

Oh, thank you for all the suggestions already!

I have very short hair, so any sort of hair drier thing is probably not very useful!

I do wear jewellery so that's definitely worth considering!

@GreyGardens88 Emma Bridgewater is an excellent call, thank you – I've always liked her stuff!

Kitchen stuff in general might well be a good idea, but I don't have space for something very big like an airfryer or a kitchenaid (cool though that would be!).

@raspberryk For my 21st I got a kindle! Still going strong today and one of my most-used possessions :)

@someaddsugar Thanks, running shoes are a great idea, mine are absolutely past it!

@17caterpillars1mouse great list! I'm definitely stealing fancy truffles!

Rose gold watch from fossil or Michael, kors

totallydevoidofideas · 31/05/2020 21:53

Do you like Art? You could get a really nice signed print from someone famous, or an original cartoon.

SpeedofaSloth · 31/05/2020 21:56

Nice earrings. I got some little diamond studs off DH for my 30th and I have worn them a lot since then.

Lindy2 · 31/05/2020 21:57

Do you have room in your garden for some nice garden furniture? You might like a nice garden seat so you can sit outside with baby in comfort.

If you got garden centre vouchers you could spend them ok as most garden centres are open again.

NotExactlyHappyToHelp · 31/05/2020 22:12

What about a National Trust membership? Lots of lovely days out to be had if you like that sort of thing.

cherrypiepie · 31/05/2020 22:12

Can you ask for them all to give money to put toward a specific item?

Something luxury that you wouldn't usually spend that amount on and something that will give years service and is a decent brand eg rayban sun glasses, Classic watch, gold necklace, Veja / Nike trainers/ kitchen aid/bean to cup coffee machine/ fancy pan set/ awesome blender/cashmere jumper/ leather bag/ designer scarf. Have a look at local auction rooms For secondhand jewellery.

Davros · 31/05/2020 22:39

Oh god, don't get kitchen or cooking equipment! How about cinema vouchers for after Lockdown or membership to something or subscriptions. If you have a garden, a bird feeding table is brilliant. Hi Malibu perfume. Good jewellery like the diamond studs mentioned above from your DH

raspberryk · 31/05/2020 22:48

@Davros... why not? Some people like cooking and I use my kettle multiple times per day and at least one of the other of the le creuset cooking equipment daily and hate using other cookware - when I'm away etc.
Cinema tickets aren't a 30th present, you use it and it's gone? I wouldn't like a bird table either, maybe when I'm 50 Grin
I'd love to have room for a proper coffee machine - 40th goals!
Perfume and jewellery is great, pair of quality boots, shoes or coat that you wouldn't usually splash out on?

Lockheart · 31/05/2020 22:57

For my 30th my parents gave me £50 and that was everything I got(!).

If I could have picked though, a stand mixer or a good rice cooker would have been nice. Either of those would have been lovely.

My friends parents sent her and her husband on a mini break to Lisbon, maybe something like that for the future?

Davros · 31/05/2020 23:39

I've always thought that if you want or need cooking or household stuff then it should be a household purchase. Gifts should be personal. I suppose if you personally want, e.g. a rice cooker then why not but surely it's for everyone, not just you?

YerAWizardHarry · 31/05/2020 23:42

I treated myself to a really fancy blender with birthday vouchers, I love it! Use it to make iced coffees, cocktails, smoothies. You can even use it to make dough for bread.

OhioOhioOhio · 31/05/2020 23:44

Hot tub

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 01/06/2020 00:51

I got a sewing machine for my 30th.

queenmother · 01/06/2020 01:34

Hot tub is such a good shout. Use it for something truly indulgent op. I can't even remember what I got for my 30th.

PawPawNoodle · 01/06/2020 02:19

Its my 30th in 2 weeks, Mr Noodle has bought me a YSL card holder (can't quite stretch to a full 1k handbag so the teeniest of leather goods will do me) and a pair of trainers.

If anyone else asks me what I'd like it'll be a pair of rose gold hoops.

CaptainDragon · 01/06/2020 13:27

Thank you everyone for all the new ideas!

A watch might be a good idea as I don't currently have one but I'm not keen on rose gold and have a metal alloy allergy so would take some careful hunting to find something that I like but am not allergic to.

@totallydevoidofideas Art is a fab idea, there's one artist I've always loved and nearly got a print of his for our first wedding anniversary but chickened out of the cost!

I'm really lucky that I already have nice seating in my garden, and national trust membership (which I massively recommend) and sadly definitely no room for a hot tub!

Would like a weekend away more than anything, but don't know if I'm daft to ask for one as presumably by the time we can safely go anywhere, I'll have a newborn!
