Chocolate milkshake

Years ago, my friend and I used to make the best milkshakes using a recipe from a magazine, would have been something like family circle. I can’t for the life of me remember the recipe, it had something to do with melting galaxy chocolate and blending it together with vanilla ice cream.
If I just did that, would it make a nice milkshake?! I don’t think I’ve made one since but I’m really craving something properly chocolatey and cold but not directly an ice cream!
All the recipes I’ve seen involve either spoonfuls of Nutella (gross) or powdered hot chocolate sort of stuff (equally unappealing). Does anyone else make a brilliant chocolate milkshake and have a recipe they could share? Please! I’m desperate Grin

Nesquik powder from Lidl stirred well into milk is good; otherwise head to the supermarket and buy choclate milk; or if the craving is cold chocolate - do what I do and keep your chocolate in the fridge!

Vanilla ice cream blended with hot chocolate powder and milk is amazing. Drank far too much of it when I was pregnant.

DH and DS make milkshakes out of whatever we have in the cupboards.
He says the best one was : 1 tin of Ambrosia chocolate custard + chocolate ice cream sauce + handful of crushed ice (all blended) topped with whipped cream and coco pops.

Some interesting sounding combinations here! Can’t say I’m tempted by any of them Blush sorry!!
Powders make me heave, I think it’s the result of drinking protein shakes quite a lot a few years ago, they never quite disguised the powdery taste/texture and now I can’t get over the idea of having anything powdery.
And I definitely don’t like custard, however that is quite genius if you do Grin

I think melting chocolate and blending it with vanilla ice cream (and maybe some milk) sounds delish. Give it a go and let us know how it went!

Ps. Personally I would use dark chocolate as I prefer that to milk chocolate especially in a recipe like this.

Mominatrix · 02/06/2020 07:12

Wouldn't mixing melted chocolate with ice cream just harden the chocolate and just melt the ice cream faster? I can imagine that you would end up with a gritty goop as a result.

I understand you would avoid things like nesquick, but are you averse to cocoa/cacao? It is a powder, but it is simply pure chocolate with some of the cocoa butter removed. If you mix it with boiling water, vanilla, corn syrup, butter and cream you will get a fudge sauce which will remain liquid at room temperature. Pour this sauce in a blender with ice and ice cream and you will have a delicious chocolate milkshake. You can even pour into regular milk and stir and get chocolate milk.

I know you said you don't like Nutella, but what about an ordinary chocolate spread? Or like the Malteser or M & M one? Or if you like peanut butter, the Reese's peanut butter cup one, or the Bischoff one (although that's not chocolate, but still, oh yum!).

Or you could just slightly melt chocolate ice cream and stir until it's the consistency of milkshake. I do that as my teeth are really sensitive! Grin

I used to make chocolate milkshake the way you describe. Haven't done it for years and I don't have the actual recipe anymore but I am fairly certain it was

2 cups of vanilla ice cream

Half a cup of milk (not skimmed in those days it was whole milk)

Melted dairy milk, at least a quarter of a cup (can you have too much chocolate?!)

I say cups but I used to use a regular mug, I guess it is proportion rather than specific measurement.

Slowly whisk the coolish, melted choc into the milk. Then put ice cream in blender and slowly pour the choc/milk mix in as it is blending.

I had found the recipe in a magazine too so maybe its the same one. I used to cut them out and keep them but a few years ago I had a declutter of my recipe folder so it probably went in the bin then. Hope it's what you are looking for. Smile

Go to McDonalds for a takeaway. Or buy some Frijj from the supermarket, it’s amazing.

QuestionableMouse · 02/06/2020 08:20

McDonald's aren't doing shakes on the limited menu, sorry!

Blend a good chocolate ice cream and milk. You can get choc syrups too that are pretty nice.

namechangeX2 · 02/06/2020 08:21

Two of your favourite chocolates.
Milk
Vanilla ice cream
Blender

I used to make my own,
Scoop of ice cream
Milk to your preferred amount
Bag of minstrels
Kinder bueno
Blend it all up
Heaven Grin

Oh ffs, what’s the point of even being open?! What am I supposed to dip my fries into?

QuestionableMouse · 02/06/2020 11:16

Buy a flurry instead? 😕😂😂

ToothFairyNemesis · 02/06/2020 11:20

Flurry’s and milkshake are made from the same machine. They aren’t selling either as it’s a pain to clean.

TheIblisHasspoken · 02/06/2020 11:22

If you put melted choc in the ice cream, and blend it will go chocolatey, but also bitty as some bits of the chocolate will harden.
If you make a ganache (just melt choc and cream together, either in a microwave or a Bain Marie (sp?) Confused then blend that with ice cream and milk, you'll hopefully get close what you want! Good Luck!

QuestionableMouse · 02/06/2020 11:52

Core flurrys are on the limited menu. Just not milkshake or blended drinks.

TheChosenTwo · 06/06/2020 20:19

You couldn’t pay me to have a McFlurry! They just look horrible, like a mr whippy Envy
@Magissa that looks like it, I’m going to give it a go tomorrow, thanks!
I think it’s because it’s mixed slowly that the chocolate doesn’t resolidify but then again it might have done, just didn’t care or notice all those years ago!
No I’m not averse to coco powder, I use it for baking all the time but I just think powdery drinks are all kinds of wrong Grin
